Jay Kristoff

3.88 AVERAGE

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I will literally read anything Jay Kristoff writes. And I mean ANYTHING. Even if it was the terms and conditions notices you get whenever you sign-up to something. Or the long as credit sequence at the end of every Marvel movie.

My point is that Kristoff has the ability to draw you in and have you gripping the edge of your seat in everything he writes. I’ve never laughed and cursed so much whilst reading a book than I do when reading Kristoff’s novels.

Lifel1k3 is just like every other one of his novels: non-stop action with a band of super sassy, quirky characters and a torturous / rip-your-heart-out cliffhanger at the end of the book (seriously we have to wait a whole year after THAT revelation ahhhhh).

I highly recommend to anyone and everyone looking for a new series to obsess over.

Mr. Kristoff is a master weaver. He weaves this beautiful rug right under your feet and then he YANKS the bitch out from under you. Damn is he good. Everyone of his books are different. HE's not an author that has a "style." Each book is it's own story with it's own voice.
This book starts off with a bang. I mean, a bot fight in a gladiator style setting. It keeps moving all the way through. This book is action packed, fast paced bloody goodness. There is machine, logica, lifelikes, and all sorts of other not humans.
Lemon Fresh is one of my favorite sidekicks ever. She's spunky and loyal and fun. Eve is the definition of a survivor. Zeke is fascinating. I loved all the characters and the setting. It reminded me a little of waterworld, mixed with blade runner, Disney's atlantis, and robots.

This is not the end of me.
This is just one more enemy.

WOW. This has definitely earned a place with my favourites. Kristoff has produced a novel that is funny, scientific, heart-rendingly emotional, and so real. Eve, Lemon, Cricket, and Ezekiel are each so memorable in their own ways - as is the Preacher, Gabriel, Faith, Silas, and all the other characters. Lifel1k3 feels like part Ted Dekker's [b:Showdown|456057|Showdown (Paradise, #1)|Ted Dekker|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1329547365s/456057.jpg|2507883], part [b:Defy the Stars|31423196|Defy the Stars (Constellation, #1)|Claudia Gray|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1484967166s/31423196.jpg|47841519], and part [b:Illuminae|23395680|Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1)|Amie Kaufman|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1443433956s/23395680.jpg|26653661].

I especially loved that Kristoff conveys the destructive nature of racism excellently through the relationship of the humans and the robots.

I adored this book from cover to cover (that ending, though. What am I supposed to do with that? I can't wait until book 2 is released with that echoing in my brain.) and I will certainly be adding it to my personal collection. Lemon was probably my favourite character.

A solid new scifi book from Kristoff. His take on a Mad Max-like setting with robots gone rogue is interesting and fully fleshed out.

The lingo and bot fighting are original and fit with the vibe of the story, and I love how he fit in a great friendship in the middle of unraveling a mystery and fighting for your life.

Good stuff to come.

I've sat on this review for a minute because I needed time to wrap my around a lot of things. Mostly the last few pages where everything sort of just socks you in the gut. But, also I needed to organize my thoughts, because I didn't want to spoil anything major. Bless my roommate for sitting on this and not spoiling the end for me. She managed to read this last year, but sadly I never got around to picking it up. It was well worth the wait, and I'm glad to only have small wait before diving into DEV1AT3. Which will push every other book I'm reading to the bottom of the pile in May.

The best place to start is probably by saying the robot battle at the start of the book totally distracted me from the fact this is Anastasia Romanov re-telling. I was so distracted by robots and Lemon-freaking-Fresh that I missed all signs pointing to that direction, until Zeke showed up. Then I realized what was going on, and I can't believe Jay Kristoff got me attached to an Anastasia Romanov re-telling. I have a lot of reasons why I usually avoid this area of re-telling. The biggest one is a feel like it's one that's sort done a lot, but I'll let you know it's never been done like this.

Only Jay Kristoff thought robots would make that story more interesting. They did though, because by the time I realized what was happening I was already invested in the story. I couldn't just stop. I needed to make sure Lemon and Cricket survived this book! Because they are precious and needed to be protected at all costs. ALL COSTS!

LIFEL1KE was the first book I've read that was all Jay Kristoff's writing style and all his world building. He did not disappoint me one bit. In fact I'm looking forward to jumping into his other series at some point. Because I'm the world's slowest reader and it takes me ages to get through books. Even ones I loved as much as this one.

As I sit here I'm trying to find something I didn't like about the book, but nothing is honestly coming to mind. Every part of LIFEL1K3 is on point: the world building, the characters, the plot. Yeah, I wasn't overly excited about the Romanov connection, but that's more my hang up than anything else. Once I'd gotten into the heart of the book I stopped caring about that. I was so focused on Eve's journey, on praying Lemon and Cricket make it out alive, and on trying to figure out what terrible thing Zeke was hiding. I knew it was something, he was trying too hard, and I was enjoying how much we kept shooting him. Which he deserved. Every single time.

Cause he's a lying lair who lies.

Before I wrap this up I do want to talk about Eve for a hot second. I was really happy that her character grew the way it did throughout the entire story. Honestly I shouldn't have been surprised, all the characters in the Illuminae Series are solid. But, I still worried a bit as more of Eve's past was unveiled that she was going to turn into some whiny ball of angst trying to figure who she is. Bless Jay Kristoff for not letting that happen. Bless him for having her pull up her big girl pants and realize things sucked, but people wanted them dead and she'd panic later. Because I adore our main character and I didn't want that to change.

I mean she's not Lemon Fresh, but so few of us are.

This book ran me through a gambit of emotions and was so well thought out. I'd love a prequel series one day about War that destroyed the world, or how the people started rebuilding after. There so much I want to know about things that laid up to where we meet Eve. It's all brilliant. In fact if life hadn't of hit in the face so hard I probably would have tore through this book faster than I did. Sadly, I kept getting book blocked life.

I'm super excited for book 2, DEV1AT3, that comes out this May! Excited to see what kind of trouble everyone finds themselves into next, and I'm still worried about Lemon and Cricket. I realize no one is safe in the hands of Jay Kristoff.

Buy, Borrow, or Skip: Whatever gets this books in your hands! It's amazing and my friends have been troopers listening to my gush about this book over the last month that I've been reading it.

I read this book in anticipation for Jay Kristoff’s book tour as he is coming to Brisbane on the 22nd of May. I can’t wait to meet him!!! (Spoiler: he was awesome!)

So the book! It was unlike anything I have ever read that’s for sure but in the best way possible. It kind of gave me Big Hero Six vibes which is one of my all time favourite Disney movies! There are so many great quotes I highlighted through out the book, I can't express enough how great of a writer Jay is!

Characters are amazing: First of all! Jay writes character and dialogue so freaking well! i really commend the way he is able to show character development and growth. I loved Lemon fresh, I think she is my favourite character, loved her name and her sass! I can't wait to learn more about her life since it was so sad to learn how she came into Eve's life. I really enjoyed her friendship with Eve, they would do anything for each other and in the mist of conflict they still managed to joke around and make light of the moment. Cricket was cute even though he would hate being called cute, I totally get how he feels being called little!

"stronger together...together forever."

Eve was BADASS! despite everything that happened in her past and everything that was going down in the present, she was more concerned for everyone else's safety and that is a quality in people I really value. I felt so sorry for Eve when she just felt like her whole life was a lie and everybody kept lying to her.

The world was complex and intriguing: I have read sci-fi in the past even though I say i'm not a huge fan of it but really looking at the books i have read this year so far, I really am and thanks to Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman! I have never read anything with robotics in it before and it was really cool, i love the whole concept of LifeLikes but it is really flipping creepy.

'the best loves are forbidden ones:' I totally get the whole Romeo and Juliet star crossed lovers since Lifelike's don't have the ability to actually love someone since they probably only love the idea of love which Jay mentioned in at his tour stop in Brisbane. Zeke was a bit of an ass saying that he wouldn't lie to Eve and he withheld a lot of major information that would have helped Eve fill in the pieces of her life. So I was mad at him too haha. I loved Zeke and Lemon fresh's friendship towards the end of the novel when they both were both facing the prospect of loosing a friend.

"There's nothing quite the same as sitting with a real book in your hands. Breathing in the ink and feeling all those wonderful lives beneath your fingertips... In between the pages i'm not myself." ~Eve

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this read! i read through it pretty quickly or perhaps I just really wanted to finish before I got the opportunity to meet him. Either way, I highly recommend this book for those who love sci-fi or want to try reading sci-fi, with strong friendships, murderous robots, assassin dogs and a smidge of romance.

Following a searing loss in the most recent robot gladiator showdown – and pondering how in the double-hells she is going to pay for her Grandpa’s meds now that she lost all her creds on the bout – Evie stumbles upon the ruins of an android in a trash heap near home. As the android mends itself, Evie finds herself trekking across the desert with her best friend Lemon and sidekick Cricket searching for the answers to secrets she didn’t know she had.

How much more do you need to know than there is a character named Lemon Fresh (“named for the box I was found in”), a robot dog called Kaiser, and a logika named Cricket who is a machine with a big conscience – and he never lets Evie forget it: “Don’t call me little!”? Seriously, isn’t that enough to intrigue you? Not enough, eh …

Okay. How about a secret buried so deep that Evie is not sure it is really her secret? Or a bunch of androids intent on revenge? Or a maniacal half-man, half-android named Preacher that is the wildest bounty hunter you ever will read about? If that isn’t enough, I just don’t know what else to say.

Yes, I do know what else to say: listen to the audiobook! Erin Spencer is a masterful narrator of this trilogy. Her talent quietly urges readers to care where they may not otherwise give a flying and move you from android to human to machina to logika and back again while helping you keep them all straight as you read. Added bonus to the audio is that you don’t have to pay too much attention to the pronunciation guide at the beginning of Lifel1k3 because Ms. Spencer does all that work for you.

Jay Kristoff is a master at world-building and character-creation. You will become invested in storylines you never dreamt of caring about … and stalk the man mercilessly on social media to see when the next installment of a series of his is going to be released. The man is a machine … he writes and creates like crazy. Patience is rewarded but required.

Band lesen werde.

A cute easy dystopian read that had some unique parts but over all left me unfulfilled. I can't quite put my finger on why. Maybe I hoped there would be more back story on the special abilities or less focus on the love interest. I just didnt feel like it all connected.
