Books are better than the movies. Wow Nicola Yoon . I want her entire catalog 📚
i really enjoyed this book as a filler between harder reads. a big thing in books for me is format and i loved the way this book had been put together with loads of little dividers between the chapter, and the constant emailing back and forth between the two characters

This was a lovely and short read. Madeline has been quarantined her home for her whole life because she is sick. When Olly moves in next door, they spark a friendship that turns into love. Madeline begins taking risks to see Olly. As her relationship with Olly grows, she begins to see that the life she has been living is not the life she wants to continue to have. She wants to see the whole world.
The first two-thirds of this book borders on cliche, but the ending is something else entirely. Something that I would have been really interested in reading. Teenage love stories bore me. It's my own personal thing and I realize that I'm not the target audience for this book, but I could not stand reading about Olly and Maddy's love story. It was basically like every other YA love story you've read ever. Melodramatic and schmaltzy. Seriously, between all the mentions of disease and the amazing vacation Maddy and Olly go on, this book gave me flashbacks of [b:The Fault in Our Stars|11870085|The Fault in Our Stars|John Green|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1360206420s/11870085.jpg|16827462]. You never want to remind me of The Fault in Our Stars.
The relationship between Maddy and her mother ... that's something worth reading about. In fact, it's the only reason I gave this book more than one star. I wish more time had been devoted to exploring the discoveries made in the final few chapters and the impact on Maddy's life instead of the sappy YA love story.

I expected this to mimic "The Fault in Our Stars" but was pleasantly surprised that it does not. It was sweet and heartbreaking and unexpected. The drawings and graphics that accompany the text are perfect. Can't wait to see how well the movie matches the book!
It was a quick read - I like the books with very short chapters :) A good YA story with intelligent and mentally healthy (mostly) characters which makes you wonder how far one might for for love. I saw the ending coming but it was interesting to see how the author approached it.
It started of okay and I thought I would like it after all the hype it got. But my god, was I underwhelmed and annoyed. At first, I did like Maddie's character. The way she viewed her illness and her relationship with her Mom and Carla. I thought the writing was okay and I enjoyed the way this was told through different media's. The emails with Olly were cute, and I liked her sense of humour. After that the whole book did a 180. It reeks of intsa-love to me. After like 10 pages of talking with Olly she admits she loves him. Actually, often times I thought this book could literally almost be a thriller, with the secrets that are kept. Maddie becomes basically obsessed with Olly. She doesn't care about anything else. She was selfish and immature and was just plain stupid. I mean, if you have an illness that's so serious, surely you would think things through a lot more. The person I cared most about was the mother. I felt sorry for her, and hated Maddie at the end because of the way Maddie treat her through almost all of the book. Olly as a character felt bland and fell flat. I really think I would of benefited from a pov from him to not make him feel so 2D. Everything was so predictable, even the twist at the end which I had guessed from the very beginning. I found myself questioning a lot why or how that would actually even happen, especially stuff surrounding doctor's and nurses in general, that would probably never have let some of the stuff that happened in this book actually happen. It felt unrealistic at times. Also what sort of ending was that. It was so abrupt. I know it was supposed to be romantic and all, but what about Olly. What if he never read the email, because he did stop replying? What if he never showed up? What if he's moved on from her? This brings me back to Maddie being obsessed with Olly, not thinking anything through, and just basically the whole book being way too unrealistic.
Spoiler
On a last note, being very nit-picky, but the part where Maddy mentions body image irked me. She say she doesn't know what she is supposed to look like, what's perfect? That's fine. No problem. But then its like she blames it on being sheltered her whole life, and not being around anyone so it doesn't bother her. She basically says would she have body issues if she was normal. Excuse me, she's been on the internet before. If anything, I would have thought she would be more likely to have body issues. Proof of my point earlier.
"Maybe growing up means disappointing the people we love."
This book pleasantly surprised me. I was a bit hesitant going into it because I didn't read the blurb close enough. I thought Maddy had a form of anxiety and it was going be another one of those girl-meets-boy/boy-saves-girl type of books. Which annoy the hell out of me. But thankfully, it was not. It has a good blend of emotions.
I didn't love it, but I also didn't hate it. Just one of those books that falls in the middle somewhere.

MORE? MORE! @ P.S. I love that book!
THE WORLD: The world you and me live in. Story based in USA.
CHARACTERS: Madeline is the main character who has SCID aka she has no immunity to anything and dies upon exposure to everyday life. So all her life she has been locked in her house with her nurse and her mother. Frankly, I really liked Madeline. She loves reading, she writes reviews online hehe and well she is just a very likable character. Then one day comes into picture Olly, basically a neighbours kid that takes interest in Madeline. Of course because she cannot leave the house their contact is mainly via messenger. But it is sweet, I do not have big feelings for Olly but I think he was very neutral character. For sure did not annoy me. And then we have the mother....ah if you read the book you will understand why I hate her. Stupid stupid selfish woman.
LOVE: Romance is very clear in this book. Madeline likes Olly and Olly likes Madeline. Simple.
PLUS: I think it creates a big awareness to SCID which is always a very good thing! Other than that the book was a super fast and super easy read.
MINUS: The ending. I think the consequences for the crime were really really non realistic. I mean seriously in real life it would be a huge scandal, revoked licenses and just in general jail time. How was this different from kidnapping exactly?
OVERALL: It was good but it was not amazing.
