Ugh, cliffhangers man! Now I have to wait until next year? Ugh, I hate life.

The Other Side of the Sky was such a fun book to dive into! In it, you will meet North and Nimh. He is a prince from the Sky realm and she isn't. She is more divine on the ground. So I was giddy with excitement for these two to meet. Once they did, ugh, I couldn't help but ship them.

Both characters were extremely likable to me and I really enjoyed watching them grow throughout the book as well. I mean, it just had to happen since North was thrown into a whole new situation/world - ya know?

I will admit, though, that the beginning start off a little slow for me. Or maybe I was just confused by some things BUT I totally blame myself for all of that. I was watching football and reading.. and those things just didn't mix for me yesterday.

Once I got really focused and invested into the book/journey, nothing could distract me. I ate it all up and now I have to sit and pout because the next book wont be out until next year. Ugh, that damn cliffhanger is hurting me all over again.

This novel deals with themes of Faith, "Purity", Responsibility & Destiny.
It is part 1 of 2

I wanted to learn everything much faster than the author was telling it.

I am assuming it was on purpose that the audience is not sure for a good part of the novel whether magic is real or not. I personally wanted that settled MUCH SOONER THAN IT WAS.

The 2 main characters feel very fleshed-out to me and understandable. The world feels very real.
I would recommend to those who enjoy mystery and not knowing until the very last moment.

this book took me a little less than a month to read and I DNFed it at page 173. It truly isn't a bad book, I just think I'm not in a fantasy mood. I had such a hard time staying focused and I often found myself checking the page numbers to see if I had made any significant progress. I will try to read this book another day.

This book is probably for you if:
- you enjoy YA fantasy (I don't any more, but I still find myself reading some every now and then)
- have read and enjoyed other works from either Amie Kaufman or Megan Spooner (I have, and I loved the Starbound series, that's why I even considered picking this up)

It wasn't for me, though. I listened to the audiobook and it just didn't manage to hold my attention. My mind kept wandering A LOT and the thing I remember most is the fact that I didn't like either of the MCs

2023 Challenge ➳ Judge a Book by Its Cover. Read all of the books on my “Beautiful Covers” shelf!
Ahh, the last book of my 2023 reading challenge! I’m so proud of myself for finishing with so much time to spare! (On the other hand, a challenge that has turned up many mediocre books is, ironically, ending on a mediocre note.)
I loved the concept of this book - a sci-fi and fantasy mashup with a cover that stunning? C’mon. Give it to me.
But The Other Side of the Sky lacked emotion, depth, and personality. The worlds of both of the characters were described poorly, and there was no imagery whatsoever. The writing was bland, and North and Nimh’s perspectives were indistinguishable.
SpoilerIt also made me uncomfortable that North was in a polygamous relationship; I don’t get why he had to be. I guess it’s considered an LGBTQ+ identity now? Weird that polygamy went from being compared to things like pedophilia to being celebrated. I would have much preferred him just having a boyfriend if representation was a concern.

All that being said, some of the plot was entertaining and the concept was just amazing. I didn’t hate it, I just didn’t love it either.

I’ve loved Amie Kaufman’s books she’s written with Jay Kristoff (Illuminae Files and Aurora Cycle), which are super-fun, wild rides in space, and one she has written with Meagan Spooner, These Broken Stars, which starts in space but ends up down on a planet and has a different kind of feel entirely. Kaufman and Spooner here create a world that’s not set in space except that technology launched one set of people up into the sky. Most of this book is set on the surface of the planet, where life is somewhat primitive, lacking in technology, and people use magic. This is very much a story about two young people finding themselves, making choices about how to use their skills, and having to make hard decisions about what they want for themselves when those desires conflict with “the greater good.” Nimh and North are strong characters, and they’re facing some impossible choices. I just wanted them to be happy and be able to be in love. The book introduces a villain who really is terrifying and powerful, so the conflict and tension ratchets up pretty high. Now, again, to wait for the second book to see where the authors take the story.
