I'm enjoying the story and the continued world-building but I think the art and simple colours are the real shining part of this series.
While I still enjoyed reading stories from this world, these "Three Tales" weren't as strong or engaging as the previous material.
Actual rating: 3.5 stars
I picked this up for two reasons:
1) I want to try out the graphic novel/comic book genre.
2) I absolutely LOVE the movie that was adapted from this.
I really enjoyed this comic book bindup. I will say that I enjoyed the movie MORE, but I did like the book a lot.
I really love the art. It's messy and indistinct but it's perfect for the story. I especially love some of the full pages that focus on vampire teeth and blood. It's delightfully gory.
It's just too short. That's really the problem. The film had way more time to really develop characters and make us care about them, and more time to really explore the world. I mean, it's called THIRTY Days of Night, but those thirty days seem really short in the comic book version.
But honestly, I didn't read it for characters. I can watch the movie for that. I just wanted some awesome vampires and lots of blood and a hint of a bigger world, which is exactly what I got. I can't wait to get the next installments in the series!

Reread - I'm not a massive fan of the art, I like the colour palette but the faces and bodies are a bit too crude for my to fully enjoy
It's a great concept for a vampire story - a place where it's constantly night? Of course that's where the critters will go!
Even though this is the start a series, it can definitely be read as one stand alone volume that doesn't necessarily need to be expanded in any way. That's a good and a bad thing - good because you don't need to shell out any money on the rest of the volumes if you're just interested in this story, but bad because it means the whole thing is rather rushed

Niles has created the perfect setting for vampires to thrive and Templesmith’s artwork is wholly unique. I liked that there was less focus on lore and more focus on the peril of the characters of Eben and Stella and their fight to stay alive long enough to make it to sunrise in a month.

The art really captured the frigid, dark setting and the monstrous action of the story, and the use of different fonts for the humans vs vampires was a really nice touch. Interesting plotline, great portrayal of fear, and a surprisingly emotional showdown.
To make it a 5 star:
A few more pages at the end to wrap up the fight more and give a moment to breathe before the poignant ending. One loose end too, but i fet that this is just vol 1.
To make it a 5 star:
Graphic: Death, Gore, Gun violence, Violence, Blood, Murder
Moderate: Child death
Minor: Fire/Fire injury
There's a lot to like with this graphic novel, visually it is pretty stunning although it might not suit everyone. At times it looked quite blurred as though the artist doesn't want you seeing some things too clearly. The artwork still looks pretty amazing but consistency seems to be a bit of an issue, I noticed this more in the beginning of the comic more than the end.
The colour palette is dark, to suit the hopelessness of the survivors situation, with vibrant red being used liberally when blood is splashed about and that it something the artist is not shy with. These are not your romantic vampires, they're the good old fashioned vamps that happily rip out your throat and revel in the mayhem they cause.
A couple of things bothered me, one is that there is no time line in the comic as to how many days have passed. It makes it seem as though everything is happening on the first night when in fact the conclusion to the story comes in right at the 30 day end. The plot line with the people from New Orleans is never really explained, who they were, why the woman wanted photographs or how they would fit into the rest of the series. I felt they had no real bearing on the story and therefore superfluous to it's needs.
An enjoyable read and a series I might buy more of it the price is right. Recommended.
