I liked the humor. The relationships between the main characters were crafted with expert-ease. The mystery felt hurried and not well fleshed out.

For a person who doesn't like cozy mysteries, I sure like this series, following the hijinks of Flavia de Luce, a precocious 11-year-old amateur detective, with a keen interest in chemistry. It doesn't hurt that Jayne Entwhistle is an excellent narrator.

I just adore little Flavia de Luce! She is sassy, intelligent, has an endearing obsession with chemistry, and an undying enthusiasm for solving mysteries. What impresses me the most about this series is that the author does not let readers forget that Flavia is like so many other eleven year old girls: she personifies her bike Gladys, constantly bickers with her older sisters, and she drives the story through strength of will and her unflappability. This is the third book in the series, but I was still amazed at the twists and revelations that kept me guessing until the very end. I'm looking forward to reading the next one!

I continue to hate her odious, bullying sisters. But it was sweet in this one to get her father growing, perhaps slowly, a bit more proud of Flavia's crime-solving exploits. And to see her make a friend, however weird and dysfunctional she might be.

I love this series. It's one of my favourites and I can't wait to read the last one in the series. You will fall in love with clever little Flavia. You'll want her to solve the crime and protect herself from her horrible older sisters. When you finish you'll be begging for the next instalment.
Also, two thumbs up for talented Ontario writer!~

The more I read of Flavia the more I love her. At first I got the impression she was somewhat of a sociopath.
She has grown on me and I can't help but think I would have loved to hang out with her when I was a kid. Hell, even now I think it would be neat.
