Amazing insight into the inner workings of our subconscious mind. Very informative and thoroughly entertaining. Totally recommend the hidden brain podcast too.
This is a very readable book that explains how much of our behavior is due to the unconscious. I would have probably rated it higher if I had not read about some of the same studies in newer books. This in no way diminishes the writer's approach to making complex ideas relatable by using narratives. Some readers have criticized the lengths of these narratives. My brain likes a story and will probably remember the facts conveyed longer for the stories.
This is a very quick read, mostly fairly superficial, but a good intro to the idea that we don't know what we're actually thinking quiet often. I especially appreciated the sections regarding how people would believe themselves free of racial bias while in fact making decisions that hinge on just that bias without knowing it. These are important ideas, though I know that most of the people who should read them won't.
[4 stars] The precursor to the Hidden Brain podcast, this book explores the subconscious elements of implicit bias through a sociological, psychological, and neurological lens. I thought it was well-researched but often verbose, and sometimes too scientific and academic. For folks interested in exploring this topic from Shankar Vedantam’s point of view, the podcast may suffice.
