Frindle

This was a very cute book about a Grade 5 teacher, Mrs. Granger, who loves the dictionary and accidentally sets off a classroom war with a student, Nick Allen, who wants to create his own word to add to the dictionary. Nick decides to start his process, almost by mistake, as a joke on his teacher. Pretty soon, the teacher sets her foot down, trying to teach the students that there are plenty of words already in the dictionary that they need to learn. Hence ensues a war between the entire community and Mrs. Granger-a word of (new) words. I won't spoil the ending, but everything turns out okay in the end. This book is perfect classroom reading for G4/G5 students. I am sure every student will enjoy the idea of a feud between a teacher and students. I am not so sure all of them would understand what is really behind the feud which is respect between teachers and students and the life-long learning that can result.

Nick loves to liven things up with his great ideas, but this year his 5th-grade teacher is the no-nonsense Mrs. Granger. Of course, this doesn't stop Nick from trying some of his old tricks. After a particularly interesting class discussion about words, Nick decided to create a new word for pen and he calls it a Frindle. Will his word take off or will Mrs. Granger shut down all of the excitement before Frindle has a chance to catch on?

My children have all read and adored this book for years, but I never took the time to read it until this summer, and it is an absolutely delightful read. I enjoyed the spirit of the main character, Nick, as well as his "nemesis," Mrs. Granger. Of course, the best part of this book was the delightful plot twist at the end, which proved to be a source of much discussion with my online book club students.

Very cute story!!

Creative and clever, “Frindle” encourages readers to challenge the status quo. Civil disobedience and the power of language are good lessons for children to learn. “Frindle” explores these ideas through a genuinely fun story of child rebellion.

One of the best chapter books for kids that I have read in a long time. Crying by the end.

this book is such a good idea! i could read this anytime, and still enjoy it!

Read it with my nieces. It’s a great kid’s book.

I first read this years ago and gave it 3 stars. But now I've read it to my kids, and I think I liked it better and gave it 4 stars.

It reminds me of all the new gen z lingo like skibidi Ohio rizz. Kids can definitely create new words.

Also, I love stories about teachers who make a difference, and Mrs. Granger definitely did that. I got a little choked up reading her letter to Nick.

My kids also really liked this book.

A very simple story and yet contains a powerful message about freedom of expression and the impact of words in our lives. These are the kinds of books that young people either grade schoolers or high schoolers should be reading. Stories like 'Frindle' are such good springboards for worthy discussions of important issues.

My heart is overflowing and so filled by this wholesome book - the ending actually made me teary eyed. It is so well paced, so touching and easily one of the most precious stories I've ever read. Frindle serves as an investigation of the power of language and the influence of teachers. You're never too old to read this if you've never read it before!
