I have to admit the first part of this book was rather bland.
But I held on because I wanted to see how it would all end. And I am glad I did. Marissa Meyer tried to knit up every last last string in the end. Even the things forgot about! She brought them up and tied everything up.
And I am proud of her. The Lunar Chronicles are great and I highly recommend them!

Winter is the last book in the main story of the Lunar Chronicles. This is a retelling of Snow White, following Winter, Luna's princess, who is the victim of Levana's brutal jealousy. In this book, the story comes to a head, and all the buildup from the past three books culminates in the coronation.
This is a wonderful conclusion to the series. I loved seeing all the characters and couples resolve their storylines, each in a uniquely gratifying way. They all have their unique identity and voice, and seeing such a diverse cast is always great. The story elements from Snow White are creatively intertwined, referencing the iconic story beats without compromising the main story. Winter, as a character, is enthralling to read, especially from her point of view. Her mental illness makes her inner monologue scattered, but Meyer skillfully keeps it easy to comprehend.
The qualm I hold with this book, which, although present in the others, is more prevalent in this one, is the repetitive nature of some of the minor conflicts. It felt like certain mistakes kept being repeated, such as a character assumed dead later showing up to cause havoc. Similarly, the group being split up only to be reunited a couple of pages later was overdone; the stakes were lower every time they did so.
A wonderful conclusion to a wonderful series, I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this series from my middle school years. Although young adult, it is not as juvenile as some others in the genre; it takes itself seriously enough to create an intense yet whimsical story.

To tell you the truth, I feel like this book had so much potential but much of it was wasted so badly. I really like the book, don’t get me wrong. But I feel like everything leading up to the final events was kind of unnecessary. Like the constant separation of the crew and the back of forth of pretty much everywhere became so repetitive and boring that I was about to give up on the book. Even though I kinda hate to admit it, Winter and Jacin were getting on my nerves. When their chapters came up I just wanted to skip through them. Like I found their problems to be kinda boring (but still very valid ofc.)
I hate to say it but I feel like the book needed more romance. I mean take this in count, the last 3-4 chapters were the best (imo) because we got romance sciences with every character. The others ones were just kind of repetitive. And Winters relationship with Jacin kind of bothered me. Scarlet really has an obsession with saying “alpha mate” and it gets me uncomfortable but I can deal with it (I mean I did endure teen wolf lol.)
Overall, the book was really good but it has as much potential as the first book had. I don’t think I’ll read stars above because I just found out that it isn’t only about Cinder and Kai (which is like the only couple I care about sorry

I think honestly I'm rating this one so high purely because it's the end of the main series and I always get attached, but it was still a really good book. It's at a much quicker pace than the others just as there's the normal plot to accomplish (the new fairy tale to bring into a character) but also the overarching war drama so like wow that's a lot! I think it did a good job even with the bit of rush to it, just because we already had so much of it plotted out. but I'll attempt to break it down here.
- winter: I love her plotline and the ending for her made me sad though I'm hoping for a continued recovery. I loved how well she was writing and how different she was from the other characters. she's so intellegent in her own way and funny and it was interesting to see how her brain worked after seeing her from a far a few times in the other books. I also really liked that we got to see Jacin in this one being soft with her and it was so freaking cute.
- cinder: proud of my girl for real, she goes through so much in this book and I just want nothing but the best for her. seeing how much she had changed from book one until this was crazy, she has literally grown and changed so much but it was great when there were moments where you still saw our young mechanic hidden in there still. I also LOVED her with Kai in this book, oh my gosh what an amazing couple. 10/10 no notes
- cress and the captain: cute, no notes here. I love how he finally admitted how he felt about her and how they got their moment even if it took a LOT for them to get there.
- scarlett: dude she went through soooo much in this book its actually criminal and I wish the absolute best for her mental recovery. cause girls gonna need some help before they go back to france. I will also say I love how she never lost her attitude and skill at bossing the wolf soliders around. my only complaint about wolf is I wish we hadn't had to see him change to be even less human, just gave me an ick that I didn't feel was needed for the storyline especially when he still immediately folds at the sight of her lmao
- IKOOOO: my girl!! my beautiful android who I loved loved loved she's still the best character and a hoot and there is very clearly a set line of what could be a romance between her and a guard but I like how it wasn't pushed- though I know there's two books with her as the lead so I'm guessing that's where we'll see it again.
overall that had nothing to do with plot but eh it's a war plot there's gonna be a war. the humans and non humans lol of this story were what mattered. I will say as a last thing, love to Wolf's mom and their whole area because they were heroic af

I absolutely LOVED Winter. After having bad experience with last books in series, this one was fitting and pretty much perfect. There was a balance of action and romance and suspense and politics. Nothing seemed rushed or elongated. There were quite a few times where i had to stop and appreciate the dialogue because the characters were just hilarious I stayed up late reading it, reading 220+ pages a day. The connections to fairy tales were well placed and never overwhelming (throughout the series as well), some I didnt even realize for a while. The worldbuilding continued but never seemed to be a bit much. The revolution and the sectors were reminiscent of The Hunger Games, but not in a bad way, just enough to warrant a comparison. The characters were realisitic and their voices were very distinct, something that is often missed in YA. Also, I have like three new OTPs (ThornexCress is just the cutest thing ever. And KaixCinder. And JacinxWinter). It's great. Winter is a complex and intriguing character that I will not soon forget (as well as the others, but this is her book).
I havent read a book that I couldnt put down in a long time, and I'm glad that it was Winter that broke that streak.

Woot, such a great ending to a really great series. The female characters did not get on my nerves and were not nearly as much as I thought when I started this series. Each are so strong in their own way and bring something to the table.
This series became a little darker and more violent with each book; so if that is not your thing, don't pick them up. If you know me, the darker the better; the bloodier, the better; and last but not least; the more twisted, oh yeah, even better. Levana is the violent, twisted villain we could all love to hate. She made the series even more readable and entertaining. Like, "What more dastardly deed can she do to top the last one??!!" I loved/hated her.
Yes, there are YA tropes.... it's a YA book. Just sayin'.... you don't want those, then don't read YA.
This is well-written, and has fully fleshed out characters and I think, just a great fairytale retelling. I had a lot of fun reading this and am ready to read The Stars Above.
