Definitely wasn't her best work.

Originally read 1999, re-reading May 2015

I loved this book so much when I was 19. I still love it now, even though if I look at it really critically there are weaknesses. In some ways it's very much of a time and a place, a coming of age in a queer culture that was already changing rapidly, but for me it still works because coming of age is always insane and screwed up, no matter what the culture or where you are or who.

some of the latter chapters here are rehashed in Rent Girl, which I'd already read, but they were fun to revisit nonetheless. as exhilarating as any michelle tea, though i'll always prefer valencia.

Wasn't as possessed by it as I was by The Chelsea Whistle and Valencia but it was still super readable. I think probably reading the other two, which came out later, was always gonna do that, especially since some of the stories in Passionate Mistakes also appear in the other books. Didn't much like Eileen Myles's afterword. Like it was ok but then she was like 'I find myself thirsting for the details [of Michelle's childhood sexual abuse]' and it's like seriously? I know Michelle went on to write about that in detail but I think that comment from Eileen was inappropriate and invasive. MORE TO THE POINT THO, Michelle Tea is awesome.

I love Michelle Tea. This is obviously her first novel, and her style hadn't QUITE kicked in yet, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.
