Great book! VERY long and very descriptive, but the fantastic characters and the abundance of wit and humor was well worth it. Glad that I had the audiobook because it probably would have been a DNF if reading the physical copy (due to length).
Well-drawn characters who speak in distinctive voices. A plot that twists and turns, keeping you guessing. But the resolution is a bit pat and relies on events that you learn ONLY when the mystery is solved. That's not fair. Neither are the racist descriptions of the "Hindoos" who demonstrate patience and persistence in recovering the stone that was stolen from them in the first place.

Can’t believe how such an old book was so easy to read and funny. One of my dads favourites and now mine.
What a fun mystery! There are twists and turns, there are interesting narrators, and there are witty observations. The "love" story aspect of it is unfortunately pretty weak, though. Nevertheless, it was a nice read.
I was assigned to read this book for a college class. I am so glad that I was! This is the perfect mystery for fans of Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
The story was interesting, the characters were complex, and the ending was unexpected. I highly recommend this classic.

Fairly a hit, though you can see where Wilkie Collins was paid by the word. And else the...romantic longing wasn't quite it, but it was kind of compelling for the most part. Mr. Gabriel Betteredge's narrative was funnier than I expected from a mystery novel, but we started things off well because of his humor. It was generally a good time. More Wilkie Collins to come. Armadale?
ps. There's something to be said that a jewel from India, taken from the forehead of a deity, would cause bad luck to the British folk who want it for their own...Curious.

It was one of the three books I chose for my final English Oral exam.
I genuinely tried to read it but I gave up after like a third of the book. I did not get quizzed on it and I retain no memory of what happened in that third I read.

This book basically determined my career (because of the class for which I read it, I decided to pursue a career in literature). So, yeah.
