This was the third time I read this book. I think it is an excellent trip through history--life in the US in 1960. So much of what he saw on that one trip was significant to what our country has become in the years since.

Yes, I went back for a fourth helping! This time I played the audio in my car as I drove around for a couple of weeks. It was fun to hear his assessment of Texas now that I have lived here for almost 8 (wow!)years. He was right on the money. Little has changed in many respects in the past 50 yrs in what Texans are like! That was actually kind of fun to hear.

The last section on civil rights in the South actually moved me to tears. I hope if I visited the areas he went to then that I would find much change!

Read this 55 years after his travels. Sad that our country still struggles with race issues.

steinbeck has always been tempted by endless travel. he finally packs up his truck, named rocinante, and brings along his poodle charley to set off on a great american cross country road trip. in an effort to discover what america is really all about, steinbeck comes across a hurricane, giant redwood trees, his hometown that doesn’t feel like home anymore, prostatitis, and the hard reality of the divided south in the 1960s. so many adventures all to end up back where he started.

4.5 rounded up to 5! steinbeck is absolutely hilarious. so much better reading him when i don’t have to analyze for school. it felt like i was just reading his personal journal and i really loved it. he thinks so deeply and makes me want to be more mindful of the details around me. the way he writes about people and nature is the definition of “romanticize your life”. after reading this, i feel like i just traveled around america in a time machine. would recommend and read again (but have a dictionary ready).

Quite a dull book, I really wasn’t very interested in the authors thoughts as he trucked on, a lot of which seemed a bit fictionalised anyway.

It was short but loooong.

I enjoyed this introduction to Steinbeck very much.  I want to read more of Steinbeck's works, but whether it will be fiction or non-fiction next, I haven't decided. My bigger goal is to immerse myself in his writing and then take a trip to explore California's "Steinbeck Country".
