I don't even know what to say about this book but I fear that a 'dystopian' book is slowly becoming reality.
Nothing I write can do justice to this book. A masterpiece.
Apparently disliking this book makes you anti-feminist.

I don’t like to say a plot is unrealistic because, its Atwood’s book, she can make the characters and plot do whatever she wants; but the plot was unrealistic. And this is one of the first instances in my reading that fact really took away from the story. If you can even call it a story.
Gun down Congress and cancel the constitution in one night and the next morning you wake up in a dystopian society where women are enslaved to the men. Bruh.
The premise is terrifying. The execution is sloppy. Reading the story was akin to watching paint dry.
Throughout my reading, I’m left wondering what exactly is going on. Atwood offers the tiniest of tid-bits nestled in between long prose of mundane and irrelevant details. [oddly, lacking the ability to use quotation marks - most of the time] It’s alluded that the main character doesn’t have much of an idea what’s happening either - and I guess the thought was to transfer that to the reader. It left me wanting more. It left me hating this book.
In the end, you really don’t know much more than you did in the beginning. There is nothing to latch onto in this book. Everything is given to you just skimming the surface. There is *so much* left unsaid and I hate it.

While it’s a rare skill, many authors can write quite sharply. Atwood, however, not only forges a blade in fire and describes its laughing gleam, but her lushly vicious language coats its trenchant edges in the blood of the future tense—that is, she describes the casualties to reverse-choreograph the battle itself.
I didn’t realize that The Handmaid’s Tale was written in the first-person present tense, and it seems strange that Offred isn’t a real woman—well, this novel calls into question the very nature of womanhood itself, so perhaps that’s the wrong kind of question. Offred’s humanity is never lost, and neither is the harshly pertinent reality that plays out between the lines.

Θα πω μόνο ότι το απόλαυσα όσο δεν πάει. Ότι με έβαλε σε σκέψεις και κάπου λίγο με τρόμαξε με το πόσο τρομακτικά επίκαιρο είναι παρότι γράφτηκε πριν σχεδόν 40 χρόνια.
Κι όχι μόνο για την επιστροφή σε μια εποχή που οι γυναίκες δεν έχουν λόγο για το τι συμβαίνει στο σώμα τους. Όχι μόνο γιατί η Άτγουντ έχει αφουγκραστεί επακριβώς τη θέση της γυναίκας μέσα σε μια πατριαρχική κοινωνία. Το πόσο εύκολο πρακτικά είναι να ανατραπούν κεκτημένα. Το βλέπουμε. Καθημερινά.
Αλλά και το πώς έχει συλλάβει το πόσο εύκολα παραχωρούμε τις ελευθερίες μας μπροστά σε έναν κίνδυνο. Όποιο κίνδυνο. Σας θυμίζει κάτι; Πόσο εύκολα το παράλογο μπορεί να γίνει φυσιολογικό.
Δε θα επεκταθώ. Είναι σκέψεις δικές μου που έκανα διαβάζοντας το βιβλίο.
Επίσης να αναφέρω ότι είναι από τις ελάχιστες φορές που έχω δει τηλεοπτική μεταφορά – παρότι όχι όλη ακόμα – πριν διαβάσω το βιβλίο. Δεν το συνηθίζω. Αλλά να πω ότι παρότι ήξερα ας πούμε τι γίνεται δε μου χάλασε την εμπειρία της ανάγνωσης. Όχι μόνο γιατί η γραφή της Atwood είναι πολυεπίπεδη δίνοντας χώρο για πολύ σκέψη αλλά και γιατί η σειρά κρατάει κάπου τη δική της εξέλιξη στην ιστορία. Κι αυτό μου άρεσε πολύ.
Δικαίως θεωρείται ένα από τα καλύτερα βιβλία. Απλά διαβάστε το!
