I don’t know what kind of Midwest hillbilly I must be hahaha this was the fanciest cookbook ever in my mind! I am going to try two of the recipes! It was beautiful and some seriously unique recipes.

Ok, so I have a thing for Alison Roman. So sue me. Her recipes are accessible, adaptable, they take just enough time for me to really enjoy the process of cooking but not long enough to make me want to throw the whole thing out the window, and they’re fucking good. I found myself reading this and marking all the recipes I wanted to try immediately, and when I finished well over half the book was marked. Can’t wait for dinner time to come!

there are a lot of interesting recipes here. they are mostly 'upgrades' of standards that make them more interesting with salt-acid-fat-heat sorts of tweaks that would add sparks of flavor. For example white beans with escarole, which is a standard, has capers, lemon and mint and plum almond cake has brown butter. Those sound really great and i intend to try them! My complaints are with the pictures--come on Alison, how could you have let them style you like a sex goddess? I bet that dopey styling has added ten bucks to the cost of this book.

Put on hold at the library before all the ~drama~ (and before COVID for that matter.)
Saved a few recipes that look good but I'm like not a hip foodie millennial (though I do like mashed up anchovies so idk.)

Disclaimer: I have not made any of the recipes yet. Also disclaimer: not much for vegans or vegetarians in here, and A LOT of anchovies. Like, a lot.

That said, I thought this looked pretty good! Many of the recipes looked impressive but would be easy enough for me to do. I didn't think these would be Wednesday night dinners, but certainly a side dish I could take to Thanksgiving. Until I start thinking about the likelihood of ever having Thanksgiving with my family again and I get weepy. But I digress! The writing itself is often pretentious, but the author acknowledges it. And I appreciate that she advocates for fruit as a dessert, three good cheeses for snacking, and offers some really good-looking sides that don't all have bacon in them. I think that's the biggest takeaway for me here- there's a middle ground between fanning out a bunch of Kraft singles on a plate and spending 9 hours building an edible chandelier (good grief, Paul Hollywood).

I am interested in a few recipes. I will have to review once I actually try them. Only a few recipes are to my taste, so we shall see.
