343 pages did not warn me just how short this book was going to be. I read it in 3 hours. I couldn't put it down.
The trouble with this book is that I don't think anyone can be satisfied by it. You're never sure what bits of information are relevant to the story and which aren't. And the ending was just disappointing. Mike wasn't a very good protagonist. He was selfish and whiny.
The rules of the universe, especially in regards to the 'indie kids' was never explained. I still don't get them. I honestly understand so little in regards to the whole thing. Why are they called indie kids? Even Nathan calls them that. Why are the adults so unwilling to talk about the weirdness that goes on? How can people pick and choose whether they're 'indie kids' or not and yet talk about not being able to choose whether you're the 'chosen one' or not? And they talk about having 'indie kid' names like Henna but not being one? How can they choose, when the indie kids themselves don't seem to be able to choose?
And did anyone actually like the bit at the end where
I'd probably give this book 4 stars if it was any other author, but I expect more cohesion and impact from a Patrick Ness book than this.

Jared offers to take away Mike's OCD? It felt awkward, forced and it seemed to be like it negated Mike's entire plotline in the book up until that point. His only part in the story other than the OCD was whining and pining after Henna. Jared and Mike's entire relationship was built up so well throughout and then torn down in the space of one argument, and I'm still not sure why that argument about Jared's secret relationship with Nathan happened. I mean, honestly, I thought Jared and Mike ending up together would've been a better ending because Henna was a bit of a special snowflake anyway, and I never got what Mike saw in her.I'd probably give this book 4 stars if it was any other author, but I expect more cohesion and impact from a Patrick Ness book than this.
Highschool ending is a little like everything blowing up but you being fine anyway.
Give it to Patrick Ness to write two books in one.
Moderate: Alcoholism, Animal death, Bullying, Death, Eating disorder, Mental illness, Suicidal thoughts, Grief, Car accident, Murder, Fire/Fire injury
Think this is one of the best books that depicts mental health beautifully.

It wasn't bad but it just really wasn't for me. And really didn't fit my mood at the time
This book got me back into reading after a 3 year long reading slump!
Very easy and fun to read. :)

I was really excited for this book. I was. Because I, like I'm sure you as a reader have as well, have asked myself the question, "Yeah, but what's going on to the rest of the students when the school blows up?" Among similar questions, multiple times. Yet, this book really was just another fiction work with the occasional mention of a supernatural event. It reads, at least to me, like a contemporary. In that genre, it's not terrible, but it isn't anything special either. So, three stars.

It’s a cozy read. Dealing with very true and very real topics and realities but with the background of supernaturals and paranormal which kinda make it so funny that everything is flipped. It’s an odd mixture of proper jokes and relatable satire, yet also explores the complexities of finding one's own extraordinary in the midst of ordinary life.
I also did love the chapter titles. It’s very Percy Jackson I’m the way it literally explains the entire chapter I’m a dorky fun way. But also has nothing to do with the actual plot because it’s the lives of the indies and the chapters is what is happening in the real world and I love it.
Favourite quote: ““The thing about scars, though,” she says. “Nothing you can do except wear them with pride.””
