So unique. The brothers are fraternal triplets that create a private security firm. Their primary client being males who are abused. Logan and Grace are perfect together. Such chemistry, a little bit of a heavy subject line but it was done very well. Great Kindle Unlimited find! New to me author! I'm on to the next one, gotta read about Blake!

Claiming Grace will not leave you disappointed

I'm not sure why there are a few negative reviews but after finishing this book I'd give it a 4.9 star rating. Emotional abuse is just as life altering as physical. There may be no visible scars or bruises but what it does to the person is still devastating to the recipient.

Logan Anderson has opened Ace Security with his two brothers as a tribute to their father who suffered emotional abuse from the mother. Little did they know how much business they'd have helping those who don't have anywhere to turn. But it's when Logan reconnected with Grace his high school sweetheart and former tutor that he's confronted with the possibility that even though there aren't visible scars the damage has already been done. It will take the entire Anderson family and her best friends to rescue Grace from her parents in time. The ending may be wrapped up into a pretty little bow but it proves that payback can really be a wonderful thing.

Grace Mason wants nothing more than to be loved by her parents but after suffering through their emotional and verbal abuse for years when her best friend Felicity helps her reconnect with her former crush Logan, she will be finally at free. Logan and his brothers will give her the family and love that's she's been missing and they will stop at nothing to save her from her parents.

Claiming Grace (Ace Security #1) by Susan Stoker

Narrated by Erin Bennett

Romantic Suspense. Interrelated Standalone.

I was under the impression that Susan Stoker’s books are all heavily military. But I see her on the bestseller lists, and she will be attending her second Wicked Book Weekend this April, so I really wanted to see what her books are about. When I found Claiming Grace and Claiming Alexis on audible AND audible KU, I grabbed them up.

It was NOTHING like I expected. Though he had been in the military, this is not a “war” book like I thought. It’s a second chance romance with some of the weirdest circumstances I have read about.

Logan and Grace were best friends in High School, but something more was brewing between them when Logan shipped off to the army and they promised to write. Logan wrote, and his letters were returned. Grace never received the letters and never had an address to send hers to. Both of them were so hurt and angry that the other lost touch.

Logan has returned to town to join his brothers in a new business helping men (mostly) who are in abusive situations, and providing security.

Grace lives with “The Crazies”.  Seriously, her parents are as crazy as they get. Rich and controlling, with spies everywhere, these nuts would manipulate Grace in any way they could to keep the almost-30-year-old living with them. First they would say they couldn’t get along without her, acting like they were dying, then they would convince her she was incompetent to live alone, then they got even crazier.
“Grace got up to walk out, and her father grabbed her arm, forced her to sit back down, and handcuffed her to the chair with her arms behind her.”

Grace worked for them, they tracked everything she did, including phone calls, bank accounts and more. She’d learned to be sneaky, but for God’s sake, she is almost 30!!! WHY THE FUCK DIDN”T SHE JUST LEAVE????

As the book continues, we get a little education about abuse sufferers, and I began to understand a little better. But strangely enough, Logan, who is opening a business based on abusers, doesn’t really believe she can be emotionally bullied and beat down to the point you give up fighting.
“If you haven’t figured out that sometimes words can hurt a whole hell of a lot more than fists, then you’re not half the man I thought you were.”

When Logan and Grace reunite, they fall back into the amazing friendship they had in high school, and finally, it’s more. But her parents have another agenda in mind and they are getting crazier and crazier in order to get what they want.

Luckily, with the help of a good man in her corner, Grace’s backbone begins to form.
“As long as Logan Anderson held her hand, she could take on the world.”

Likes:

  • •A unique story.

  • •Despite my annoyance at the heroine at times, I NEEDED to know what would happen and never wanted to stop listening.

  • •I good blend of romance and suspense.

  • •Well written.

  • •I really liked Logan and his brothers and liked Grace a lot once she grew a backbone.

Dislikes:

  • •Grace was SO abused, it’s just crazy to me that any 29 year old can put up with this.

  • •I found myself eye-rolling a lot.

  • •The parents were almost cartoon crazy.

  • •3rd person (but well done 3rd person that it took a while to notice)

  • •You have to suspend reality a bit too much.

The Narration:

Erin Bennett did an amazing job narrating this 3rd person book and was wonderful at both male and female voices. I think I might have DNF’s the book if I was reading it, but the narration really made me stick with it past the point where I thought she was too weak to live, to where I finally began to enjoy it.

The Down & Dirty:

Claiming Grace was different than I expected from Susan Stoker. It was my first of her books, and despite me not fully buying into a 30 year old taking that kind of abuse, I was still on the edge of my seat and found myself driving around just to see what happens next. I read a number of reviews for this, and apparently Susan Stoker fans say it isn’t her best work. But I see the potential. I loved the balance of romance and suspense despite my eye rolling activities. I am glad I stuck with it past the first set of eye rolls and decided to suspend reality a bit and just enjoy myself listening. And I did. This will definitely not be my last Susan Stoker book.

Rating: 4 Stars, 3.5 Heat, 4.5 Narration

Grace and Logan meet as teens and become a refuge for each other. When they graduate, Logan leaves town to enlist and they promise to stay in touch. They don't speak again for 1o years. When Logan comes back to town, they eventually find out that her parents kept them apart. Unbeknownst to Logan, Grace's parents are manipulative abusers who have been controlling Grace for her entire life and now needs help.

This sweet story of second chances is a quick and easy read with drama and a full cast of characters. At times, certain details were a little implausible and the dialogue felt a little flat, but ultimately it was a good read with some sweet touches between the main characters.

The books by this author I had previously read were more current and I could tell the difference in her writing and some of the language used. There were some points in this story where a turn of phrase made me cringe. But I love that I was able to see the growth the author has had through the years. This isn’t a bad story or poorly written by any means.

I like the setup of the series, Logan and his brothers return home after their abusive mother kills their father and herself. They left after high school to get away from her, but now want to do something to help others who are in abusive relationships. Especially since, in their experience, there are not as many places of safety for abused men.

Logan and Grace have fantastic chemistry. They were fantastic friends in school and both held a flame for the other. They both hold hard feelings about the way their friendship ended, but once they finally talk to each other they realize there is still a spark and neither is actually to blame for the way their relationship fell apart.

Sounds normal enough, right? But Grace’s parents are bonkers. A lot is going on with them and this story does a good job (albeit over the top!) of spotlighting emotional and psychological abuse and how it can be just as terrible as physical abuse. At times it can be hard to sympathise with Grace because of how she gives her parents multiple chances to be good people. Yet that is the nature of abuse.

I’m finding this author’s romantic suspense stories to be great to listen to while cooking, cleaning, or doing other errands. They are easy to follow while being entertaining.

Pretty unhinged…

I read a lot of Susan Stoker. But this one was so ridiculous I almost didn’t make it through.

📔 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼: Claiming Grace by Susan Stoker

📚𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲: Second chance romance

📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Logan left Grace behind when he went to the military. After 10 years of radio silence, he’s back and he wants her more than ever.

🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: I picked this book up because it had free audio and I thought I could rely on Susan Stoker. But man this one was just completely unhinged. The plot line, every important moment… it all read so cringe. I want to forget about this book as soon as possible.

There just wasn’t anything to cling to. The male MC sounded really rude and closed minded and judgy. The female MC was helpless and kind of silly. The dialogue was rough as hell.

I’m so glad it’s over.

𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 2/5 ⭐⭐

𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗲 l 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 3/5 🌶🌶🌶

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱: Stoker’s Seal of Protection and Seal of Protection Legacy series are some of my favorite guilty pleasure reads.

Ok.

Not the quality of writing I’m used to from this author but still a good story with great characters. It was just a little too much for me.
