I really enjoyed this! Good for you Christine, defending women against all the attacks from male poets. I enjoyed hearing about the real and fictional women popular in 1300s France. It was super interesting to hear about Christine's contemporaries - knowing what I know about how it turned out for those women later on.
I would love to read a modern version of this - the women we uphold today and the virtues we celebrate.

“Men who have slandered the opposite sex out of envy have usually known women who were cleverer and more virtuous than they are.”
A medieval-era feminist work? Yes… but meh. It is really interesting to see the beginnings of feminism in popular culture of the time, but our girl Christine was a nun, so there is a lot of religious shame in this book. A cool read, but dry prose (duh, this was back in the day).
Also, it gave “A Christmas Carol” vibes somehow? And a little bit of the tv show “Dollface?” Like a self-insert fic for a nun lady in the 1400s.
If you’re on a feminism literary journey, it’s worth checking out.

"This is so dated!" I think about a book written by a woman at the turn of the 15th century, when, really, what I should be thinking is, "This is so h*cking METAL." It's still very gratifying to see a woman drop the "men had better clean up their own gender before they go after women" mic over 600 years later.
I can't IMAGINE how women reacted to this book but it must have been amazing. Like A Doll's House, I wish I could briefly time travel back to see how it was received.

This book was fascinating in that it told the story of so many different women (and by today's standard, Children) who were devout Christians either in her time or before the 13th century. It is tragic and awful and sociologically fascinating to read this woman who is clearly a feminist of her day also display such a conservative Christian view point on how to conduct oneself. I wonder how she would view today. Either way, I read this for background on a lecture by Professor Dorothy Armstrong and I am glad I did.

Parts I and II were just fabulous and has resulted in a very long list of women about whom I want to read/learn more. Part II ... I guess it was necessary to get the book sold, but the subject matter (praising women who stayed with horribly abusive husbands, who committed suicide upon their husband's death, whose martyrdom is described in excruciating, and more) was a let down after the first two parts. Still, 5 stars for a great book for its time.
