A competent, straightforward police procedural set in Norfolk England. I listened because it is free on Audible.

Very solid opening book in a mystery series that I plan to continue reading.

An entertaining, witty, well-written British police procedural. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

This is my second book by Peter Grainger and although the detective mystery part of it isn't super unique, it's realistic and he does a good job with presenting it and how the detectives solve the mystery. But where I think he really does a good job is building the personalities and characteristics of the individuals in law enforcement, and the relationships between them. After reading the latest book, where Smith has basically retired and his team is at loose ends, it was good to go back and read about how it all got started. It was interesting reading about Smith's initially interactions with Waters and Reed and the other characters in the Kings Lake district. Although I'm not super familiar with police procedures, these books seem very well written and they held my interest throughout. I am definitely looking forward to moving forward in this series!

March 2023:
I just reread this and while it's been 3 years and I didn't remember much, it was still a fun read and it brought me back to Smith's work. I really like Waters and Reed and I'm looking forward to catching up with the rest of this series.

I like the character of D.C. Smith and the young PC he was given to mentor. The story moved along at a good pace and came to a satisfactory conclusion.
Listening to the Audible version really gave me a sense of the characters too. Gildart Jackson has the perfect voice and rhythm to keep me concentrating on the story and not pronunciations or unusual attempts to change voice too much for characters.
I've started on book 2 straight away because I enjoyed this one so much!

3.5 ☆ Interesing enough that I'll give the next book in the series a try but my feeling is that the characters can develop in a couple of different ways and how that plays out is likely to be the thing that ultimately makes me stick with it long term.

I felt that this didn't really go anywhere - PC Plod.
Main character was fairly endearing, but didn't leave me wanting for more. I'm heading back to D Silva, and Gabriel Allon...
