I picked this up and put it down numerous times before I could finally finish it in one sitting. Something about it intrigued me enough to keep reading. I liked the humorous moments, and having attended Catholic school, found the whole religious aspect quite fascinating. Overall, it was an interesting and enjoyable read, but I wondered at the end how I would explain this book to someone without sounding ridiculous!

Misfit was an amazing book about a girl with demonic powers. I haven’t read many demon books and this one was great.

I do not want to give too much away for this book because I definitely want everyone to read it. To begin, Jael is half demon, half mortal, an anomaly. Her Mother was a Succubus known by many names (trust me, you’ll be surprised when you find them out) who gave her life to protect her daughter. The book gave us a nice back story about the history of her mother and father, and history in general. I loved the telling of the stories and how Jael seemed to be magically transported into the story instead of just told what happened.

I loved the idea that Jael is half demon and is going to a catholic school. It’s just funny to me. Furthermore, I loved all the extra attention Jael received when she got her “succubus demonic beauty." It was amazing, funny, and perverted all at the same time (wait until you see what the priests at the school do…haha…too funny). The love interest was great and gorgeous and amazing, but the best friend annoyed me. I just didn’t like her “holier than thou” attitude. Don't judge others if you cannot judge yourself first, and please don’t even get me started on her reaction to the fact that Jael is a half demon. I wanted to reach in the book and punch her myself.

All in all, I absolutely loved the book. I was engrossed while I was reading the book and thinking about reading the book when I wasn’t reading it. It was amazing and realistic how Jael came into her powers, although at times it seems like her battles were too easily won. Nonetheless, I would DEFINITELY read this book again.

Jael has always been different. She was constantly moving so she was always the new girl. Her mom died when she was only three months old. Jael knows very little about her, only what her father has told her. Basically; she knows her mother was a demon named Astarte that fell in love with a mortal named Paul.

Belial is an extremely hated, particularly evil demon. And he hates that Jael is a half-breed, with her demon mother and mortal father. He has sought out to destroy her and will do anything to do just that, including influencing her best friend.

I love Jael’s character in Misfit. She is a little awkward and finds it difficult to fit in with the world around her. I came across this book while scanning a teacher’s personal library. After reading the first chapter, I knew Misfit would be a book I would love. This was the first book I have read by [Kelley] Skovron, but it will definitely not be the last.

I had gotten a copy to read from Netgalley and was excited to dig in after I read the excerpt online. But much to my surprise by getting to page 16, nothing was exciting enough to keep me going. I rarely find books I read like that, even ones I had to read in school.

I think it had to do with the perspective of the way it was written that didn't suit my reading needs. It had such hopes, but on some level it just didn't work for me.

Maybe down the road when I have the time or remember, I can re-read again. But right now, I'm not feeling this book.

Review:
When I first heard about this book. I honestly wasn't sure about. I thought the cover was very eye catching and the description to very interesting. But at the same time I knew that there was a lot of religion in it so I was unsure. However, the publisher contacted me to review the book and I figured I may as well. And even though there is alot of religion it I really did enjoy this fantastic book.

Misfit is about Jael, a young teenager who has never fit it. Her and her father travel all over the world, never staying in one place to long. Why?Because Jael is being hunted by Belial, Duke of Hell. Jael has always known her mother was a demon but on her 16th birthday she discovers that she is in fact a half breed with supernatural powers that can be deadly if not controlled

As I mentioned above there is alot of religion in this book. And that can put people off. However, it's not that ram it down your throat kind. Jon has took alot of the christian stories and characters put his own quirky spin on them. And in a way I am glad I am a catholic because I actually knew who these people were thanks to Mass on Sundays and R.E in school. Saying that it's still pretty easy to follow.

Our main character is Jael. At first I didn't have a connection to her. I understood her and got that it must be hard always moving around and never knowing her mother. But it wasn't until she found out she was a halfbreed that I actually started to warm up to her and really get inside her head. I'm still not fully liking her though. And at times I found her POV actually quite boring. But I did like the chemistry between her and Rob. Rob is a real sweetheart. He adore's Jael and doesn't freak out when she tells him the truth about her. However, I actually prefer the flash backs from Paul, her father. He has had such an interesting and dangerous life when he met Jael's Mother. Their story I wanted more of. It was compelling and magical, full of love and danger.

The story itself was a slow starter. But as the backstory unravels itself I found myself engrossed in the book and wanted to know more and more and waiting for the big bad to come. Jon is a very talented author. He has took probably my favourite part of christian stories, Demons; and brought them to life. Some good, some bad and some down right ugly.

Overall, a really good YA novel that is truely unique. I'm not sure if there is a follow up but the ending was done in such a way that there could easily be a sequel and I really hope there is.

*Thank you Amulet publishing for providing me with a copy in exchange for a honest review.

Rate: 4/5

This book calls for a pros and cons list.

Pros: a new (kind of) perspective on demons. A relatively likable protagonist. Corruption (you know I eat that stuff up).

Cons: 5th grade writing style. One back story mixed in is fine, but it was wayyy too much. The author needed to have done more research (Confucius is not a deity!). Most anti-climatic kiss ever. Ending kind of unbelievable. Ending left loose ends with no sequel...
And didn't anyone get the feeling that this was supposed to be a first book in a trilogy but then the author was like "wait, I can squeeze this in one book!" so the first 3/4 was character development, but then the last 1/4 was squeezing in the rising action, climax, an denouement of the book. So anyway the book was meh, but I wasn't expecting too much so that's alright.

2.5 out of 5 stars

Cover (and interior): I love the way the pages are decorated! And the cover is unique, which is nice.

I really liked the synopsis of this book. It didn’t sound like the YA paranormal that has become very popular lately so I really wanted to give it a chance. Initially though, I was a bit skeptical of having a female protagonist being written by a man. I know that is really sexist, but it’s true; although I do have the same kind of skepticism for when female authors write male characters (at least lead characters). I like to be proven wrong though, and with Misfit I was.

There are so many things that I liked about this book. I loved that there was a whole new approach to heaven, hell, and demons. It was refreshing to read something that wasn’t the normal teen fare. I loved that there were characters that you loved, hated and frustrated you. I love when a book moves me to feel strong emotions. I also liked that parents and other family members were present during this novel. The father was a somewhat frustrating character for most of the novel, but you also get flashbacks to events that show why he reacts to situations in such a way. I really appreciated that.

The layout of the book was fantastic. There were short chapters and cool font for the titles of each chapter. It was a breeze to get through the book in just a couple sittings when you combine the engaging plot and characters with such short chapters.

I will definitely be reading more from this author.

i am only giving four stars because of Jael attitude towards her father at the beginning of her transform. She actted like a aspoiled brat after her transform. She acted like she was better than him jjust because she was half demon.
