Reread, 2019.

I debated revisiting this, because, like others have noted, I didn't want to destroy the youthful memory, although really the youthful memory is of reading this while recovering from a minor injury and it's all caught up in my first inklings of awareness of my own mortality and insecurities and unfulfilled desires SO I'm not really sure what I was worried of ruining now that I'm...more aware of those things. Ha. I think I appreciated the scope this time around and not just the sense of impending doom.

Okay so I finished this book like 30 minutes ago and have been sitting in bed questioning what to rate it and how I felt about it. I could tell it was good but felt like i was missing something so I watched a video explaining the book and realized just how deep and thought out this book is.

The book is a modern day retelling of the story of Geryoneis. The think is, the original story of Geryoneis is only known through fragments of the poem which have since been found and priced together. Carson seeks to splice these fragments together with her own ideas about the story.

The story takes place closer to modern day and tells the story of Geryon, a monster with red skin and wings coming to terms with his abuse, sexuality, the fact that he is a monster, and his artistry.

There are lots of themes, call backs, and beautiful lines scattered throughout. I would need to read it at least two more time to understand most of them. But at it’s core it is a compelling coming of age that beautifully mixes mythology with mundane life.

Update: Upon rereading I love this book even more. Anne Carson’s writing gets even better the second time you read it. I was able to pick up on so much more.

What an interesting little book. It’s a head scratcher for sure and I’m not sure it was the ending I wanted, but regardless, there are some gorgeous gorgeous bits of writing in this, moments where i was moved to tears and into pensive thought. A book that spirals you inward into the chaotic mix of references that float around your head and leave you with a soft, sad expression on your face as you read.

Honestly, after sitting with it a bit longer I’m bumping this up to 4.5. And could possibly be a 5 when I revisit this book again someday.

I love the way she puts feelings of environments into tangible objects and words
