The perfect book for people who thought the only thing wrong with Ethan Frome was that Wharton provided a reason why the star-crossed lovers thought they could never be together.

This book was mildly disturbing. The protagonist takes the act of objectifying women to a whole new level.

Boy, it's taken me almost a year to finish this book. I got a paperback copy at the Istanbul airport on my way back and quickly devoured the first hundreds of pages. Pamuk's writing has a magical quality of taking the readers right there in the moment of the story through the simplest descriptions of ordinary objects. I felt like I was walking through the streets of Istanbul in the fifties right there with Kemal and Füsun, falling in love. What I couldn't bear was what came after... but without spoiling anything, it's worth your time to make it to the end.
"those who read the book will certainly wish to come here to see locks of Füsun's hair, clothes, and her other belongings"
I had the strangest time reading this book. Throughout most of it, I felt like i wasnt enjoying it. The main character was so incredibly infuriating, but for some reason I kept reading. The last couple of chapters are where it totally changed for me. I think it was the whole analysis of how museums can affect a person, and it made me realise how much I DID want to visit the museum the whole book had been describing, despite the storyline and characters that had irritated me this entire time. And somehow I also ended up somewhat appreciating Kemal by the end of it.
Of course, the translation is also beautifully written, and the view into Turkish society was a super interesting backdrop for it all.

This book was an amazing journey into one person's world - his social circle, fears, hopes, doubts, love, mistakes. I loved it the minute I read the first sentence.
I couldn't finish this book unfortunately and I'm only giving it two stars because I enjoyed Pamuk's descriptions of Turkey and Istanbul. I loved Pamuk's "My Name is Red" and had really high hopes for this book, but it just didn't deliver for me. I made it over halfway through and kept pushing myself to read just a bit more but I finally gave in. I didn't like Kemal's or Fusun's characters at all. They irritated me and if they were real people who were in my life I'd probably shake them.
Definitely a frustrating read.

I knew I was losing patience with this author after finishing three of his books. With this one, I was done. He's a creep and too up his own hype. I'm done with him. Especially after this creepy Twilight male version novel with him as a character.
