Very atmospheric. Arden’s descriptions, especially of the horrors of WWI, are vivid. Mentions of a botched suicide, homosexuality, and a lack of a will to live are dealt with with empathy and care. The ghostly apparition of the protagonist’s mother and the otherworldly and Satanic appearance of “the fiddler” are intriguing and very necessary to the plot. I think this is a book I will think about after I read it.

I loved this so much. When Laura's brother is reported missing, presumed dead during WWI, Laura, a combat nurse discharged honorably with an injury, returns to Europe to find him. After an explosion that leaves him trapped in a pillbox with a German, Laura's brother Freddie and the German decide to keep each other alive, but in protecting Hans Winter, Freddie makes a deal with the mysterious and charismatic Fiddler, who haunts battlefields and the stories of half mad soldiers. Will Laura be able to save him before he loses himself? I'm now obsessed with Katherine Arden. I have to find everything she's ever written and read it immediately. I had to clear off a spot on my favorites shelf to squeeze this in. Gorgeous prose, fascinating characters, haunting and beautiful story. I can't say enough good things about it.

DNF. As much as I loved Arden’s Bear and the Nightingale trilogy, I just can’t get into this one.

Well written and interesting story. Gloomy WWI setting with some magical realism sprinkled throughout. I started to lose interest and felt like it dragged around half way. Everything just felt ‘flat’. The drama, the climax, the characters … all felt very flat and 2D.
