Firstly, big thanks to Brooke for buying me this book, I'm sorry it turned out shit, maybe don't read your copy.
An absolute let down. SO BORING. I persevered, surely there would be some substance to this book? But there just isn't. Everything Hugh says has been done a million times before in much more interesting ways. There's no humour, no eloquent writing or originality to make this book unique.
This book is serving the most dull basic memoir sprinkled with a project that is equally dull. I admire that he brings the mental health of adolescents to the forefront, and advocates for mental health literacy in schools. However, there's no mention of the social determinants and the effect those have on your mental health, which is so disappointing.
The only thing I really liked was the cute gratefulness/mindfulness activities he did with his students.
Overall ALL PARTS OF THIS BOOK ARE LACKING.

Another incredible book! The way Hugh can move between a casual conversation in his writing to a thought provoking story about one of his close friends is such a beautiful thing to experience. His belief in GEM is clearly translated through the book. I am so glad I read this gem and am eager to try out some of his philosophies in my own life. An absolute page turner!
This is a nice, short book, that provides people with some effective, and easy ways to improve their overall wellbeing. It read a bit more “memoir” to me, and is very imbued in Australian sport culture which might make it a bit inaccessible to some. But all in all, it’s helpful, easy to read and quite hard to poke holes in. I work in mental health and would definitely recommend it for anyone, struggling or not.
Such an amazing book to read / listen to! Made me laugh and cry too many times to count.
How could I recommend this book any more?! It's suitable for all readers, but especially for those who are either in a teaching or mentoring role. Have already passed it on and recommended a number of times.
Simple and uplifting, but judging by the content of The Imperfects podcast, I think Hugh’s probably more inspiring and relatable in person. I think that his tips for practice GEM are practical and easy to adopt, which is what made this book so enjoyable for me.
This book has been on my to-read list for a while. Last night I saw Hugh present in Canberra and purchased a copy of The Resilience Project. I sat down to read the first chapter and didn’t put it down until the end. It is so easy to read and the stories together are inspirational. It is emotional at times but something I would recommend for everyone to read at least once. The GEM concept is simple enough to implement, and I can’t wait to dive into Hugh’s next book.
please, please read this book! Something that everyone needs to read.
I’ve long enjoyed listening to Hugh vC on his podcast and find his approach to life inspiring. This book will hit you in all the good ways, making you laugh and cry, and leave you with a resolve to live life better. Highly recommend.
I would recommend this to everyone and everyone.
Quite a short book, but not one without feeling and meaning. I laughed, I cried and I learned.
