I’m so glad I read this book. It was the perfect selection for Black History Month.
Given the subject matter, it’s too uncomfortable for me to say “I loved this book”.
There are many difficult parts to the story, but the main theme is love and faith, which is what I enjoyed. I also felt reading this story helped further my education and understanding of American history. Although this is fiction, the story is not. There are thousands of people whose story was told here.
I do not have a lot of experience with what I’m calling “educational-political historical fiction.” This is more than a story that takes place during a certain time period.
This novel explores many political and historical issues. (TBH, it shocked me how much we are still dealing with some of these issues today.)
If you want to learn more about this part of American history (13th Amendment) but find history books or documentaries too dry (if you do best with narratives or fiction reading) this is a terrific choice and it will expose you too All sides, perspectives and beliefs held during this period.

A good continuation of the series. I look forward to the next book!
This is a sequel to the book "Yellow Crocus", about a slave and her young charge. In this book, the Civil War has ended, but slavery still exists in the south under a different name. I felt some of the writing was stiff, and the whole last third of the book was silly and unnecessary. The most compelling parts were the descriptions of how blacks were treated 20 years after the war was over. Sadly, it still sounds all too familiar.
I read the Yellow crocus way back in 2015 and i fell in love with the characters. 8 years later i still remember that book and i have only just heard there are two more books added to make this a series so i have to read them.
Mustard Seed continues the story of the author's previous book, Yellow Crocus. While that book was pre civil war The Mustard Seed waz after the civil war.
This was an emotional, captivating story about faith, family and love. Three brave, strong women who left the South before the war began, who believed that conditions had improved in Virginia, especially for the former slaves; but were wrong when they returned.
These women and their families captured my heart, evoking emotions on every page.
This was a hard read but a must read for any historical fiction lover.

After reading Yellow Crocus, I was delighted to see there was a second book and it definitely did not disappoint. This one picks up about 10 years later after Lisbeth moved to Ohio. Although they don’t see one another more than about once a year, Mattie and Lisbeth both find themselves surprisingly back in Virginia at the same time but for different reasons. Their love, loyalty, bravery, pain is undeniable and they need each other to navigate the circumstances they find themselves in. Both these books are amazingly written and I felt the characters and stories so much! Can’t wait to read the third book!
hopeful
This novel highlights the struggles for equality after the Civil War. Vivid descriptions bring the time period to life.
Another absolutely fabulous book by Laila Ibrahim ! This, Mustard Seed, a continuation of the Freedman/Johnson series, had me yelling out loud while fearing for characters. The only reason I did not finish sooner?2.5 acres needed mowing and garden beds to put to sleep!
I truly look forward to reading more from Ms. Ibrahim.
