DARK HARVEST - NORMAN PATRIDGE
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
If you're collecting titles to pop on your October/ spooky season TBR look no further.
"Halloween, 1963. They call him the October Boy, or Ol’ Hacksaw Face, or Sawtooth Jack. Whatever the name, everybody in this small Midwestern town knows who he is. How he rises from the cornfields every Halloween, a butcher knife in his hand, and makes his way toward town, where gangs of teenage boys eagerly await their chance to confront the legendary nightmare. Both the hunter and the hunted, the October Boy is the prize in an annual rite of life and death."
I didnt know WTF was going on at the start but in the best way. The author really sets the scene early with descriptions of a halloween legend based in a small-town setting. It had classic halloween/teen horror vibes. I'll keep this short and sweet like the book - lots of action, fast paced and it did exactly what i needed it to to satisfy my horror needs.

This has to be the year of letdowns for Spooktober/Halloween reads for me. I've had a bunch on my TBR that I was so excited to read but in the end, they fell completely flat. I hate to say it, but Dark Harvest ended up being a front-runner for that list. I'm not sure what I was expecting out of this book, but that was definitely not it. For me, it read like a corny, action teen movie that took place on Halloween with no explanation or history as to what's going on or even how the October Boy came to be. You're just supposed to concentrate on the over-the-top fighting and ridiculousness. I'm surprised there wasn't a cheesy explosion scene - oh wait, there was. I cannot believe this is as revered as it is, but I chalk the cult following up to how it embraces clichés and absurdity. Maybe the "so-bad-it’s-good" factor makes everyone enjoy this for its lack of subtlety and self-seriousness but that's just not my cup of tea. Reader beware - dial back your expectations on this one.

Trying way too hard to be edgy.
I am writing this review immediately after finishing the audiobook. It. Just. Is so good.
Go. Go read it.
I thoroughly enjoyed the audio version, too. Read it whatever way works best for you.
Did I read this because the film is coming out? Absolutely. For one thing, I like to read books before movie adaptations just cause it's an old habit. For another thing, I think of the book and movie adaptation as two different things. I read this to get excited for that movie. Most of all, I read this to get into spooky season.
This story is just right for the spooky season. It features many classic horror tropes (cornfield, secretive Midwest town, a scarecrow running around town, teens with guns and knives) plus some pumpkins to make it especially autumnal.
I enjoyed the way this tale unfolded. If something seemed weird, I found myself rewarded for noticing it as I got further into the book. I would totally recommend.

stylish and fun but some of the worst dialogue i’ve ever encountered
Ah justice. Wasn’t sure what to expect going into this one, but I enjoyed it. I’m not really sure how to review it without giving too much away… so I’ll just say: worthwhile read.
Also have to add, great narrator. Enjoyed listening.

This was alright. Good Halloween romp, easy breezy read. I do love small town Halloween vibes, particularly in like the 50s, which is exactly what this book is lmao. Chalk it up to a childhood in a country with minimal Halloween exposure and romanticizing that era of the holiday after seeing it in movies and TV. I do absolutely love ANYTHING relating to Jack o lanterns. Insane take but Jack o Lanterns are underutilized, they’re perfect imagery truly. So the monster in this being a killer Jack o lantern with vines for legs and arms *chef’s kiss*.
