a great, quick read to get me out of my reading rut and ready to consume all things creepy for the season!
this book was a lot of fun. the narration, setting, and villains gave it a classic stephen king vibe, and its great description of scenes only made it easier to imagine this as a made-for-tv movie or seasonal miniseries you'd catch one night in october. nothing stunning or mind-blowing, but super enjoyable and succeeded in getting me hype for halloween.
i will say...
when the october boy carjacked that one guy abd started driving around town, all i could picture was jack o'lantern from the "grim adventures of billy and mandy" halloween special (iykyk) doing donuts in a sportscar and that would make me laugh every time. not the book's fault! just a silly imagination.

Not something I would normally choose and not really my type of "horror". However, it was a good read.

I was absolutely not expecting this book to have so much dark, emotional depth to it. Especially for being sub 200 pages, this book really managed to get me attached to the characters and really care about them and this town.

The
absolute pure evil of Ricks as well as the ignorance and denial of the entire town as to what’s going on to their children
really just elevate this book from being a cheesy halloween slasher to a brutal, depressing story about a small towns complete abandonment of their youth.

More generally dark than particularly scary, but an exciting October read either way. Interesting narration + realized characters. I loved the ending!

First of all, amazing cover. Definitely drags you into the book just because of the details of the cover alone. I *must* admit I wish this story was a full on 300+ page book. I loved the story THAT much. I would love to see it fleshed out more, but it was perfect as a short story on it's own as well. I kept wondering what would happen next, and how it would all work out.. all while panicking just a little because it's such a thin book and there were so many questions (which were all answered in such a clever way!). This book will haunt my thoughts for a while, I think.

Part 1 didn't convince me this would be a good book -- it felt like I was reading a stupid childish tale. However as the novel progressed and readers learn more about the town, characters, and history, the intensity built and the suspense pulled me in. The writing style is unique, as it's jarringly directed to the reader at times, yet often leaves one to decipher the meaning. This is a fun Halloween horror that'll also make you think about gender, authority, injustice, life & death.
