Oh my god, I thought first one was wrecking, but this...should not be on a shelf of fantasy, but true horror. Half of the time I was mad at Mare for her attitude towards things and people, more mad about Shade dying again and the surrender did it all. I hated this book as much as I loved it. Never have I ever seen anything like this. Brilliant, maddening to the core, heart wrecking and simply, purely evil. I did wish for it to be a bit more mild and with a little more love in it, but that we have plenty in other books and still I think it will come soon enough.

El primer libro era entretenido, e iba bastante rápido en su ritmo. En este libro, ya acostumbrada al ritmo de la historia, me di cuenta de muchas falencias. Primero, en la protagonista, que se pasa todo el libro (al igual que el anterior, aunque yo lo había pasado por alto), diciendo todas las cosas que hace mal, que es estúpida, que es débil, que no puede hacer nada, y cada cosa que le dicen los demás sirve nada más para reforzar ese pensamiento de ella. Incluso sobre el final, cuando se intenta meter el desarrollo de un personaje en los dos últimos capítulos y mostrar "como creció", está mal hecho.

Después de tomar la primer decisión más o menos pasable de su vida, y por buenos motivos, el primer pensamiento de la protagonista es, de nuevo, "soy una tonta, en qué me metí". De nuevo, se refuerza la narración de Mare Barrow como la inútil que se merece todo lo que le pasa. Hay pocos personajes en la literatura que pueden ser soportados sin ningún crecimiento ni desarrollo de sus historias. Este no es uno de ellos.

En segundo lugar, está la decisión de las cosas que se cuentan y las cosas que no, y esto es todo decisión de la escritora y editores. El hecho de que se pase capítulos y capítulos desarrollando conflictos que no terminan en nada, y sin embargo, cuando llega el clímax, la mejor parte es pasada de largo. Pareciera que la autora intenta concentrarse más en la parte emocional de la historia. Esto estaría genial, si la parte emocional estuviera bien hecha.

Por ejemplo, cuando se muere Shade. La autora consideró pertinente que los reclamos de Farley fueran más importantes que Mare, que acababa de perder un hermano. A mí me disculparán pero una persona que pierde a su hermano es mil veces más importante que un amorío, más uno que no se desarrolló mucho. Lo único que hizo esto fue hacerme dar cuenta de que no me interesa realmente nada de lo que pase con Farley. Quizás esto fue producto de la falta de interés de la autora por hacer que al lector le interesen los personajes. Si me ponés una escena nada más donde solamente se insinúa el romance, y después seguís como si nada, esto no va a hacer que sienta lástima por dichos personajes.

Por otro lado, el hecho de que una minita de 15 la pasa por encima a la protagonista, solamente porque sabe hablar, me pareció una locura, y reafirmó el hecho de que la autora escribió una protagonista débil e inútil en todo sentido.

Escribí varias notas mientras leía, y la mayoría involucraban mi falta de credibilidad en cuanto a la historia. No logré sentirme identificada con ningún personaje, así que no importaba quién se moría ni quién sobrevivía. Pasa con casi todos los libros, que cuando los termino dedico un tiempo a pensar en ellos, a hablar con alguien sobre lo que leí, y en ese tiempo no empiezo nada más. Con este libro, empecé uno nuevo casi al instante, porque no me dejó nada que pensar.

Tres estrellas porque venía bien la historia. No sé si voy a seguir con la serie.

Everything is a copy of a copy of a copy.
Okay, to be fair, I’m not saying this book is a copycat of some other book. I’m merely saying that after what seems to be such a promising series, judging from the first installment, the second book into the series felt incredibly boring as it feels like it is using all the formula that exist within the YA dystopian novel with strong female heroine as its main character. Here we have the female heroine, with extraordinary talent, strong, the voice (or the face) of revolution, that for some reasons I could not fathom still have the time to be stuck in a loop of love.

Look, I’m not saying just because you’re in the middle of a revolution then you can’t find the time to be in love. Go be in love all you want for all I care. But, must it be an important matter into the story? And what’s with the “sleeping together arrangement”? Yes, I get that you may suffer from PTSD and it really is hard to share one own’s dark experience with others who don’t understand, but what’s the whole point of raising the issue about sleeping together? Does it have any relevance whatsoever to the story? Nope.

Also, whatever happened to you, Mare?
The constant complaining and your stream of words are just boring to its very core. I couldn’t handle it. I was missing that exhilarating feeling that was so very apparent from Red Queen. Where was it? Because I couldn’t find it within Glass Sword. Mare exhaust me to the core. Oh and don’t get me started with the streamline of new characters that to me seems like a bonus. So many characters, and so little depth to them. Oh God!

But, all is not lost. About the last eight chapters in the book, I felt like finally it picked itself up. I still find Mare’s voice in Glass Sword irritating, but thankfully the plot thickens and oh boy I am on the edge of my seat…… only to be disappointed all over again with the last two chapters.

Come on! I get that the last few chapters are supposed to built up the whole hype for the next book, but boy oh boy, it was (again) predictable as it felt like it uses the same formula of YA dystopian novel in general. Gosh! Where is my Red Queen? I want her back!
