My favorite collection so far, maybe because it was pretty much focused on the Endless.

The afterword of this book says it best: "if this isn't literature, nothing is."

WHY AM I RE-READING THIS

Brief Lives was just my speed. I love the Endless and the dynamics at play between them, so this story was right up my alley. Additionally I loved the inclusion of other mythic characters, like Ishtar and Bast, and the conclusion of the Orpheus storyline.

Also the more I think about it, the more I think I would maybe be Destruction, actually. But you can't expect internet quizzes to get everything right.

I have read these slowely over the course of the last year and a half because, contrary to my nature, i want to saver them, and understand them better. But they are just too good, the writing is just to fantastically different from anything else out there. I think I'll just have to swallow the last 5 or 6 whole and then start it again from the top...

Delirium: I didn't know you could stop being a god.
Dream: You can stop being anything.

It’s one of the most linear books of the series so far, but also one of the most inventive, esoteric, and existential. The passage where Destruction and his siblings sit under the sky together and Destruction talks of the fleeting nature of existence was so gorgeous, it felt like a kick in the chest. It’s probably one of my favorite books of the series so far, and is a fascinating exploration of life and continuity, and where all of this might end. Brief lives indeed.
