Wondering if I should continue with this series. As I read ahead in the synopses, I'm not sure this character is growing or developing.

Still like this series but this was the slowest/draggiest of the books so far. I'm all for slow-paced character driven mysteries set in English villages but this one was a bit too slow. Also didn't like the villagers as much as I had in previous books. I'm going to give the series a rest for a while but definitely pick up book 5 in a month or so.

1919 Inspector Rutledge has been sent to Scotland. The remains of a female have been found, but do they belong to Lady Eleonor Gray, missing since 1916. Her mother Lady Maude refuses to believe so. Meanwhile in Duncarrick, Fiona MacLeod has been accused and arrested for among other crimes, murder.
An enjoyable and well-written historical mystery with its interesting main character

We gain more insight into the life of Hamish MacLeod in this book. Once again, the superb detective skills and tenacity of Ian Rutledge unravel a most unusual village scandal.

This was a 4.5 but I bumped it to 5 because I really did not want to put it down. The authors did a terrific job with the suspense. Ian Rutledge is a Scotland Yard inspector who survived the trenches of WWI but is haunted by a Scottish soldier. Rutledge is summoned to Scotland to investigate a body that may or may not be the remains of the daughter of Lady Maude Gray. The woman accused of the murder is tied to Rutledge's past and refuses to tell her story because she is trying to protect a little boy whom she is raising as her son. The writers keep the story moving and only occasionally drift into melodrama, and I thought they laid out the right number of red herrings. One problem with tangled plots is the writers get themselves tangled and confuse the reader, but that never happens and I enjoyed the storytelling immensely. Recommended for mystery fans--I am reading this series in order.

I loved this offering of the series - I gave it 4 stars (instead of 5) ONLY because I'm embarrassed to say I was kinda dumb about the plot devices. So it's me, rather than the book (blushes).

The ending is one of the most satisfying I've ever read - I cannae tell you why without spoilers - let's just say it's perfection in its untidiness!
