2.5/5 Finally finished this one, it wasn’t as good as the first but it did have its good and bad moments, almost dnf’d it after the first 40ish pages (when it comes to authors messing with their fmc’s, especially romantic side of things, where they HAVE to be broken all the way down just to somewhat earn their former power back ICK) but I’m glad I came back to finish it bc there was some fun bits of adventure I would’ve missed (like the rein faire part, loved), Also that cliffhanger GIRL WTF low-key outta pocket and unnecessary

I really enjoyed this story! Obviously, the characters are very traumatized, and I think while it was prevalent, it wasn't as detailed as it could have been.
Also, the ending was incredibly rushed. One moment, they were still trying to find they're friend and like 2 chapters later, the book was over. Hopefully, the third book ties everything together much better.

While a step down from the first one, I genuinely enjoyed this book. The confusion and attempts to find oneself resonated with me, and were well depicted throughout the book. While it wasn’t as overwhelmingly romantic as the first one, there are still strong moments for Simon and Baz, and I always found myself rooting for them.

This book is endearing and exciting and heartbreaking and a bunch of other things I can't articulate right now...

This is the rare sequel that not only manages to land on an even more engaging plot than the original, but does so in a way that makes you appreciate the first book the more for it.

It was a smart choice bringing the story to America this time, allowing for Rainbow Rowell to make plenty of interesting observations about her home turf while the characters themselves deal with amusing fish-out-of-water experiences. It also had the advantage of deepening the world-building in a believable way (without any of the why-don’t-you-know-that-by-now challenge of the first book’s in medias res storyline).

And, oh, the angst! The returning characters kept right on their respective roller coasters of emotions, while new characters were instantly lovable—or loathable in the the case of some truly delightfully constructed villains.

If there’s a sequel—and I really have to believe there will be with that cliffhanger of an ending—I’ll be the first in line.
