The first book of the year lower than a 4.5 star :(

Anyway, this book had some really great potential! The beginning was really good, but the ending wasn't.

There were so many topics/issues that the book was trying to cover, but none of them were really explored enough.

I think the ending showcases this the best. It felt insanely rushed, and really didn't tie up everything well enough.

The characters were cute, but not super fleshed out, except for the main character.

Overall, it's an ok read, but the ending was not it. The art style is cute and all, but there are many other graphic novels surrounding queer people and mental health that I enjoy much more.

"One thing I can confidently say about this book is that it's gotten me thinking. ... With gorgeous art, a sensitive touch, and plenty of hope and love to carry readers through the difficult parts, this book captures something uniquely meaningful about the teenage experience, while giving readers the knowledge that it always gets better. In short: this book really is the greatest thing. (Literally.)"

I enjoyed this while reading it but have to admit it didn't leave a lasting impression. I went into this one pretty sure the big secret was going to be that the MC's old friends were dead and never really recovered from that not being true. Interesting art style which was almost too sweet compared to the content being covered but enjoyable.

Sadly, the first thing I noticed when I started reading this was that the art style was not my fav. Not a big deal because ultimately I still rate graphic novels on the story for the most part. Winifred is having to navigate high school on her own for the first time, because her 2 best friends transferred to a private school. Luckily she isn’t alone for long because during art class she meets Oscar and April who are creatives like she is and they team up, become friends, write & publish ‘zines and stuff. The story also included themes of self-harm and disordered eating that I do not think were handled as delicately as they should have been. Mainly because I don’t think the situations were very clear and the discussions were not complex and in-depth enough. It all sort of felt vague, and that didn’t work for me. There were several other instances outside of those heavier topics that felt like they just dropped off or got quickly wrapped up, again in a vague way that overall left me feeling very underwhelmed.
