I adored the chemistry between these women

DID NOT FINISH

Ugh. This book bored me to tears. Life is too short to be bothered with characters I couldn't give a #### about.

This was not the 'light' easy read that I had expected. It brought out so much melencholly in me that I found myself tearing up many times throughout the book.

I have been involved with a group of women fr the past 20+ years and I can so relate to the love/hate relationships in this book. I am a 22 year cancer survivor, so I was able to relate to the cancer element in the story. This was a VERY personal story fr me.

It made me laugh often, feel the heartbreak and disappointment of relationships. I enjoyed reading this book.

I like Lorna Landvik but I don't think this is her best effort. At times I felt it was contrived and predictable, but I still enjoyed reading this story of five women of different backgrounds who bond over 30 years of book club discussions. Basically it's "mind candy" - and don't we all need some every once in a while. Made our book club wonder what WE'll be like when we've been together for 30 years.

I LOVED THIS BOOK! My mother typed up a list of all the books they read in their "club" so that we can read them also.

A celebration of lifelong friendship and books. Don't let the title throw you off, this book is moving and powerful, with just the right amount of humor. Five very different women meet in their neighborhood and form a book club. Each member faces her own challenges, and as the years go by the group becomes a lifeline that changes the lives of all five women for the better. Each chapter begins by naming the book that was discussed by the group that month, as well as which member chose the book, and why, which gives further insights into the characters, and gives readers a list of titles to follow up on. I loved reading about the bonds between this book's cast of strong women, and it's a huge bonus that books were the bridge brought the friends together.

Diverse cast of characters: Yes

A little predictable, but laugh-out-loud funny in many places.

A book club selection for a ladies book club. It is definitely not my normal category of literature. It did drag on a little bit for me, though overall I did enjoy it. I can't say that each of the women had a distinct voice (the only way I could tell which section I was in was by the content of the story), and there were times it switched to third person preceding letters from Faith which annoyed me.

The story spans through three decades and really shows a lot of timely historical references (America's struggle to give up smoking, the AIDS epidemic within the gay community, PTSD as a result of the Vietnam war, etc.) and also a lot of emotional trials (adopting, secret lives, domestic violence, faith, cancer, facing death, etc.). I found myself feeling a bit depressed at different points, usually when a new decade happened. It reminded me how quickly life slips by and you have to make the most of it. Surround yourself with people that are worth your time and effort.

Good book but I felt like I was forcing myself to finish this one. It just wasn't holding my attention. Maybe this book came at not the right time in my life. I didn't hate it. But it wasn't my favorite either.
