Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea was a dark, eerie, and enchanting read. In all honesty, I wasn’t sure what I was going into when I picked up this one. All I knew was I wanted to read it. And, well, it really didn’t disappoint me.

This book had a great eerie, gothic feel to it, which really called out to my inner Poe. I love a good romance that has this dramatic darkness to it. Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea really brought that. But not only that, this book had a good twist, mystery, and a very unlikely male protagonist.

What I really want to talk about is the writing. Tucholke really has a unique way with words. She writes in almost a hypnotic way. The words flowed eerily and surreal. I think that is what really drew me into this book. The description she brings forth jumped into my mind in a gloomy, vivid way. Again, my inner Poe just loved that. And her description of the world she created was very intriguing.

Now, in all honest, I couldn’t really get a good grip on the characters. I did get a basic feel of them, more so about in the middle of the book, but I really felt there was so much more to them than Tucholke was writing. With that being said, I did enjoy the characters Tucholke created. Violet, though not the typical badass, kicks-your-ass-now, ask-questions-later heroine that I typically love, she was still an enjoyable character. She’s smart, and different. Very different from what I’m used to in female characters.

River West. I really did enjoy this character! He is definitely unique in his own way. I guess you can say he is also different than the fictional guys I tend of crush on. What I mean is that he isn’t good, but he isn’t bad either. He’s a definite mix of both. He had this edge that really made me see his character, and fall for him. Simply put, he is a seductive character.

The side characters also play their roles nicely throughout the book. Each one felt in place and like they belonged there. They were all pretty well-rounded. The romance between Violet and River, though at first felt rushed, didn’t really affect the story. It still felt natural, and was fun to read about. The buildup was also very nice. The ending, did felt a bit rushed. I hated that, but it did leave me curious and wanting more.

The play of supernatural was very interesting. I loved Tucholke’s take on it. She made her supernatural element in her story believable and fun. Yet also unique and creepy.

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea was intriguing, held depth, mystery, twists I didn’t see coming, and a story that was dark, eerie and hauntingly captivating. I really did enjoy it, and I cannot wait for the next book. I definitely recommend this one to those who enjoy a good dark, unique, and romantic read.

This book hates logic, because the parents leave their children for years, everyone is aware of it but no one calls child services.

This book hates realism because a guy was stabbed in the chest with a freaking shard of glass but still survived.

The blurb for this book hates readers because it's pitched as Faded Gatsby glamour (ha, where'd you get that from?) and thrilling gothic horror (eh...) meet in this terrifying, dreamy YA romance. Emphasis on the romance, which is messed up by the way.

This book hates the paranormal because abilities are described as glows and sparks and barely explained at all.

This book hates me being happy because it almost tricked me it was enjoyable while reading the middle.

This book hates consistency because it throws in a silly twist near the end after we're lead to believe another thing for the whole book.

This book hates me because I should've seen it coming.
I should start a club called Death by paranormal romance.

Longer rant review to come.

I don't know what it is, but lately, I have not been enjoying the books I read. I found this book to have many issues. I didn't like River, I didn't like how he acted. I didn't like Vi, I found her annoying as all get out. And I also was not a fan of the writing style. This is a book I've been meaning to read for years, and unfortunately, I was disappointed in how it turned out. I will not be continuing on.

Okuyun....
ama okumasanız da bir şey kaybetmezsiniz bence.

Not:Kitabın adındaki derin suların anlamını kavrayamadım.Bir şeyler mi kaçırdım acaba?Beni aydınlatın dostlarım.

I heard that this book had an element of creepiness to it but that it wasn't a horror novel, so I thought I would give it a chance and try to expand my reading genres (plus the cover is amazing!). I loved the tagline, about holding the Devil's hand and that immediately intrigued me. However, I was overall not that impressed with the book. I didn't care too much for any of the characters, and I thought that the plot line really wasn't that creepy at all. It did pick up a little bit at the end for me, however, it was just a middle of the road type of book. Still debating if I want to read the sequel.

I really enjoyed this book. I was sort of annoyed by Violet at first but I thought river made up for that. April's use of imagery is really amazing in this book. It was like I could taste the salty air and hear the waves splashing as I read. However I was a little disappointed in the plot. The summary made it seem like April would fall in love with the actual devil but I would hardly call river or ever Brodie that. But I will give her props for having a very unique story.

this book is pure magic.

im not sure if it was cause the writing or my imagination, but the setting was unbelievable. i pictured it so vividly that i could probably draw a damn map of echo. and the writing was whimsical as well. it was captivating and even brought out some emotion in me. the .25 deduction is because there were some plot holes and things that i didnt connect but its minor. i really enjoyed this, it was breathtakingly magical.

I have mixed feelings about the main character but the plot was strong enough to give it 3 1/2 stars. Violet has horrible taste in guys. She knows River is a horrible person but she lets him control her. She should have kicked him to the curb fast. The 'real' bad guy Brodie seems to have been added just to take the spotlight off of how crappy River really is. Why would you let this guy, who is a stranger, continue to live with you after you have learned he is a straight-up murderer? I will not continue this series.
