Poignant.
evoking a keen sense of sadness or regret
Poignant and unexpectedly beautiful. This novel has a way of sneaking up on you and ripping out your heart when you're not even looking.
I'm usually not the biggest fan of YA contemporary- it tends to be too mopey and melodramatic for my taste. I can better deal with angst and drama when it takes place within a thrilling plot or a fantastical setting.
This is a small story set in a smaller town with pretty trees; the trees are basically all this town has going for it.
The trees, and the people who climb them, sit in them, and love around them. They won me over.
This is a story about the quiet sadness of loss, about the humor and tragedy of fate, and about regret and redemption and love and pain and the beauty in it all.
Melina Marchetta's words literally make me get a lump in my throat and a stinging behind my eyes. The subject matter is sad, but it's more than that. Her words are evocative and transcend their meaning to create an experience. I didn't just cry, I was moved.
A wonderful and surprising book that I would recommend to many.

I was going to give this book three/four stars because some things in it left a bad taste in my mouth, but wow! that ending! bye!
Thank you, Leenah, for reccing this book to me!!!

There is a reason we read books. We seek the lives of others. We want to soak up their tragedies, their loves, their happiness, and the journey they take to reach all these things.
Jellicoe Road is a perfect example of a book that will— if you let it— immerse you in someone else's world. In this case, it is Taylor's world.
Without going into too much detail, I loved every moment of this story. There are very few books in the world that I want to swallow gulp by delicious gulp, without feeling impatient to GET TO THE END. This book, however, was a joy to read and when I got to the end, I was so heartbroken that it was over.
If I was Marchetta, I would have been terrified to write another book after this, because how could ANY OF THEM EVERY BE AS GOOD???
If you can take the pain and heartache of a very human character, make the time for this book. It is worth the read.

Absolutely gripping. In the beginning I felt just as confused and scattered as Taylor, but the story weaves itself beautifully, revealing itself at just the right moments.
Poignant, gut-wrenching, tragic and totally lovely. Grs 7+
I read this story a while ago, and I still think about it from time to time. I was really confused at the beginning, but when I got to the major plot twist, I was astounded. I didn't expect it and I slipped into the this-is-such-an-amazing-book-that-I-can't-think-about-anything-else trance. I loved it and plan to reread it someday.

Excellent book. It would have been perfect, but the ending was a little too neat with a little too much "wisdom" from the characters. But in spite of that, I really loved this and would recommend it very highly.
I think that one of the biggest pet peeves of all readers out there is feeling like they are missing information that is crutial to the plot. For me personally, I found it next to impossible to remember the names of the characters until I was nearing the end of the story.
And because of that, it's a damn good thing Melina Marchetta has an enticing way of writing, otherwise I don't think I would have gotten through this book so quick. I am glad I did though, once everything began to make sense, I found myself immensely enjoying this book - 5 stars.
