Had a long convo with Zohra after I finished this and also watched clips of the trial on YouTube. I am feeling like this is hopeless and women truly are treated as second class citizens. and we need to protect the children!! :( Cannot believe he is still teaching and coaching girl's golf

i found the premise and motivation of the book really interesting and promising. sadly it fell short. i think that stories told were certainly insightful but i think they werent told with the intentional nuance of liberating desire. it was not at all seperated from men and patriarchal concepts of conforming to gendered ideals. however i think the story concerning aaron knodel was not at all told with the particular compassion nor understanding that it deserved, as a 17yr old when reading about a teacher student relationship with someone my age i am appalled by the inclusion of graphic depictions of the assault that took place. furthermore the internalised misogyny throughout the whole scene in court was not cool and fun or anything that should be celebrated.

im glad people felt carthasis and do not want to take that away from anyone. heal in the ways you can.

This was a really tough read. I thought I'd fly through it but I just couldn't... It's the truth of the thing. It's important, but read with care.

Taddeo claims to be writing about women’s desires, but actually ends up focusing upon those of men. Considering this, she unsurprisingly comes to zero conclusions regarding women and their desires. She also states how unfortunate it is that we only hear the stories of privileged white women, but makes no effort to counteract that, as she writes only of middle class white women in hetero relationships. I also feel she inappropriately handles the subject of sexual violence, somewhat sensationalising Maggie’s storyline. The book seems to be considered by many as ~uncomfortable~ but in an ~edgy and cool~ way, but I just found it plain uncomfortable.

i really loved this book. it was raw and emotional, and the writing was (in my opinion) beautiful without being pretentious. i didn’t give it five stars because some of the sexual moments felt a bit… almost too graphic (specifically regarding Maggie.) though they were truthful and beautiful in their realness, i think some of those moments could’ve been left alluded to rather than flat out described. that’s the authors choice, though. it was also incredibly white, though the author did acknowledge that over the course of the book. overall, a beautiful read.
