It was... boring.
I know that there's a big controversy over Sara's sexuality and whether or not its realistic that she could be heterosexual amongst a race of only women. Technically, yeah, it's possible since sexuality has a massive biological component and relies on the conformation of a certain brain area. Technically Sera could have been born with a mutation that caused that area to develop differently and make her heterosexual. But was it necessary for this story? Um, no. The only conceivable reason I could think up was that author wanted it to be a kind of fate-swap thing where Sera is a straight girl born into a lesbian world and Agnes is a lesbian born into a straight world and they find a home in each other's worlds? If that makes sense? Either way idk why author chose to write it like that. It's not like we're lacking heterosexual romances in the SFF genre, or any genre at all for that matter.

I really liked this book! I almost didn't read it because of the negative reviews about it being homophobic and racist and I am glad I decided to check it out for myself. The plot kept me interested and most of the time I didn't want to put it down. There were some times that were a bit slow but for the most part it was a really engaging read.

As for the racist and homophobic aspects other people have talked about, I didn't find this to be homophobic at all. Yes, one of the main characters is from a sapphic society and turns out to be straight but another one of the main characters is from a society like ours and is gay so there is still really good representation in this book. As for the racism aspect, I agree that there could be some offensive parts. Out of the two societies on the planet in this book, the darker skinned one is seen as backwards and poor and the lighter skinned society is seen as advanced and better off.

Despite that I still enjoyed this book very much and I'm excited to read the second one!

Well...I guess I have to admit that I bought this book because of its stunning cover. I mean, LOOK at it. It’s impossible to walk past it.
But this book has issues. Lots of issues. As much as I loved the world and the idea behind this story- the racist aspects and the lack of logic at some points made me rate this with only two stars. It was pretty easy to read and the storyline was quite catchy, but I cannot ignore the subliminal racism, even though it’s probably unintentional.
Such a potential going to waste.

That world building was so fun and interesting. I enjoyed the character development too, and being shown the change rather than told it happened.
