The premise is interesting - a group of early space travelers end up coming back to a future Earth that is very different from the one we left. But the characters were all flat, and we kept being told that they were terrible, but not always shown that they were. I get that the idea was that regular people don't handle stress well, and it could have been really interesting; I just don't think that it was executed well.

A classic example of human survival behaviour in a rather interesting scenario. There are no real surprises in this adventure, even the ironic twist seemed inevitable, but I thoroughly enjoyed the tale. The story focuses on the drama of the situation but the world created was quite interesting and I would have enjoyed learning more about this version of our future.

I didn't really fall in love with any of the characters apart from Captain Marcus and it was really a tale about his experience for me, even though we get a number of perspectives. I properly despised the nasty crew members as I suspect the author intended. I was a bit disappointed when certain pairs of characters seemed to suddenly switch their outlooks, it was a little inconsistent but didn't really ruin the story at all.

This book has the distinction of being the first book I've read which places an f-bomb as the very first word, but don't let that fool you, there are some delicious passages and nice unique metaphors (or similies or analogies) in Blueshift.

There may be some small spoilers in the review...

pro:
interesting plot
good world building
con:
language! every paragraph of dialogue has at least 1-3 "f bombs" and that's before they even get to the part where they are fighting for their lives so that's no excuse.

I see no real connection between the crew mates they hate each other from the moment the story started.

pretty much all the women are flirting with the main character (typical) and he thinks they are all crazy. then mid story something flips and he's calling them his friends. hmm idk in the beginning he said he didn't care if they lived or died.
I listened all the way through because we'll it was free on audible plus and it does have an interesting story. I just wish at least some of the characters we likeable.

I wasn't sure what to expect since it's a big departure from Omega Force which is how I discovered Joshua, but it was a good read. I enjoyed the story and the characters. None of the characters felt under-developed which was nice. Great departure from his usual stuff.
