I have a dream...
To marry Pippa DaCosta and after we have a lot of children we put them to slave-labor-writing and fill the world with books like that.
I can be a tragic obsessed villain spending my life in jail reading them. It's ok. It's cool. I don't mind. I 'll be happy.

Charlie thought she could live a normal life. Little did she know, life could never be normal for a half-human, half-demon with a target on her back. Muse is back and livelier than ever, and though she tries to deny it, she cannot withstand the allure of pure chaos.

Muse was a complicated character to get behind. At times I sympathized with her traumatic past and begged her not to trust too easily. But despite her troubled past, she seems to trust people so blindly, and this could potentially be her fatal flaw.

I know we were supposed to be rooting for Stefan here- at least, that’s what it seemed- but I hate him AND Akil. They’re both lying, manipulative arses, and I think Muse deserves so much better. Not giving anything away here, but neither Stefan nor Akil should be trusted. The only one Muse can depend on is herself.

I was very invested in the first half of the book, but as it went on, it got more and more predictable. I also felt that, rather than trying to make sense of the warped relationship between Stefan and Akil, the author was more interested in trying to pull the rug out from underneath her readers over and again. Blah. Not impressed. I demand sense! In all, it wasn’t a bad book, and I’ll probably read the next one to see if it goes better.

I first read this in June 2016 and whilst I didn't review it then I did buy and read the rest of the series.

I utterly adore Muse, she's been so beaten down by life but continually scrapes herself up off the floor and comes back out swinging. And then there is the question of just who she can trust: Akil/Mamood, who rescued a beaten and abused half-blood in the netherworld, Stefan who keeps her safe from the hellhounds, both of them or neither. Pippa DaCosta has such an ability to write morally grey characters who leave you unsure if they are doing bad things for good reasons or good things for bad reasons.

There is an almost love triangle, though Muse's feelings for Akil are more ones of hero-worship and adolescent crush mixed up with being indebted to the only demon who has shown her a scrap of mercy or care. He's also the Prince of Greed and a fellow fire demon adding more confusion to the whole mix. Stefan is a fellow half-blood, seeing and accepting Muse for who she really is. The trouble is neither man nor demon is prepared to put Muse first. *Sigh.*

Throughout the story, I continually felt so much emotion, so much pain, hope, despair and love. I fell in love with the characters, even the bad ones. Well, maybe not Adam but certainly the rest of this bunch of misfits! The world-building and pace were fantastic, easily holding my attention and submerging me into this alternate reality. With a gripping storyline, that was at times deliberately frustrating too, Beyond the Veil proved just as good a read second time around.

For the most part, I liked this story. There were a couple inconsistencies and I had a couple issues with Muse's relationship with Stefan at times, but I really liked the main character's inner turmoil, growth, and abilities. The action scenes were intense, the creatures unique, the twists very good, and the villain complex. By the end, I found myself attached to everyone and am excited to continue the series. I honestly don't have many complaints, and can't wait to see what happens next!

I really loved this book!

I found it well written with a huge amount of twists & turns that kept me guessing throughout this action packed, emotional rollercoaster of a urban fantasy tale!

I will be buying the next 4 books in this 5 book series!

Great world building and characters

The world building in this book is amazing and the story line is one you can’t stop reading when you start. An all nighter for sure. I so wanted Akil to turnout to be a good guy in this book but loved learning about Stephen too. Can’t wait to find out more about Charlie’s journey in the next book!

Well that didn't take long to read! I was hooked from the first page. I hope the rest of the series is just as good.
