Written by the authors of FAST FOOD NATION, CHEW ON THIS is geared toward younger readers, but still contains lots of facts and information about the fast food industry that would boggle the minds of adults.

Very eye-opening to the fast food industries' ploys to get us to purchase. Shows you how fries are made (this was interesting) and what REALLY goes on in those slaughterhouses. As awakening as this was, fast food just tastes too nummy to stop eating on occasion.

While this book covered many topics already covered in "Fast Food Nation", it has been a number of years since I last read it and I didn't realize how much I needed the reminder of the crap that is constantly put into our food.

Here are a few of the disturbing facts I learned/relearned during reading:
- Some cattle ranchers (primarily at the industrial style "farms") feed their cows dead cows mixed in with their feed.
- Chickens are often raised in conditions where they do not have enough space to even stand up.
- Conditions for chickens were "improved" recently by some chicken companies by requiring that each chicken be given 72 square inches of living space. That is less than the size of an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.
-Processed food tastes like nothing. It only begins to have taste once natural and artificial flavors are added.
-Speaking of natural and artificial flavors; they are the exact same thing made a different way.

An eye-opening read.

Very good, but also discusting. Tells alot about the fast food industry and how bad animals are treated and all kinds of gross but true things. I read this book in my 5th grade class.

this is the adolescent reader version of "Fast Food Nation". i got it for my kids but decided to read it first. it was super informative, but didn't get bogged down in boring facts. it selected the most impactful facts and used a good example story about a regular kid/teenager who is affected by said issue and you followed the issue through their story. it was really engaging, informative, and direct. it treated kids with respect, like they can listen to good arguments and be encouraged to think about complicated things. i wish all books aimed at young people about important topics were written with the same level of care, attention, and skill. i like to think this book would have changed my mind when i was a kid.

Have I heard this before? I wonder how much material was borrowed from Fast Food Nation? I liked that book a lot more - but that was a different time and perhaps, I saw the material for the first time there.

In any case, if you haven't read Fast Food Nation and eat fast food, you should take a gander at this book. Cheap fast food is not cheap nor really food - it is fast though. The cost will hit you in the waistline or the environment. And food only in the sense that you can eat it but it really more chemicals with flavors that mimic food.

Somewhere from these type of books, I learned that eating can be an experience - not just a mindless act of putting things in your stomach. Try to experience food. It'll do your body and soul good.
