Some beautiful poems but at some point, every line sounds the same. I feel like I just a read the same sentence a thousand times.

3.5! The best parts of the collection for me were the poems in the “Red River” chapter. The final passage about the river bring a sister on page 40 was beautiful. The poem titled “riverevening” on page 45 was similarly gorgeous. Some of the other chapters didn’t hit as hard as this chapter, but an overall good collection.

Wow. I don’t typically read poetry but I’m trying to expand. I don’t typically cry when reading and I did reading this beautiful collection. Spirit woven through the words. So moving.

I enjoyed this poetry collection for the most part. It was beautifully written, and gave a lot of Metis meaning and importance of water, which I appreciated.

I was not aware of the history of the Metis, but knowing that their fate was just as tragic and bloody as Native Americans is saddening. This is a poetry collection that should be taught in history classes throughout the world. It is a bold collection that brings light to what actually happened to the aboriginal people of Canada.

"this river is my sister
she is bright and beautiful
and brown
sings soft every summer
holds us up all winter
and every spring she swells
reminds us we are just
visitors here
this is her country
she is that woman
her deft voice
reaches out
broken by everything that has been
thrown at into her
but somehow her spirit
rages on
somehow a song
like her never fades"

Katherena Vermette explores her relationship with nature by giving an ode to the river that sees all without prejudice and exacts its revenge to those who treat it without respect. This collection of poetry also explores the river’s dark murky water and the bodies it emtombs. At the same time, she beautifully writes about its power, its resilience and the ghosts that speak to those who listen.
