Loved this. Everything about it. Now to find Spirit in the Dark on vinyl...
The prose and sweet and light but the book feels slight and sloppy. All the characters have forced motivations and the conclusion is rushed and unrealistic. Joyce's hold on music and its effects on people is the most interesting aspect to the book. Its one of those that you really want to like, but in the end, it leaves you unsatisfied.
I have to be the minority on this one, but I spent the entirety of this book wondering when I was gonna DNF it... This was one of those books that you can read for hours and only get through 10 pages. The story was dull, and I found that I didn't even care about the "big reveal" that was so shocking to the other characters. The ending scenes were wrapped up way too nicely and just rubbed me the wrong way. I loved the music in this book, and Frank's listening tips actually made me download a lot of the music myself. However, there was very little else for me to enjoy.
Spoiler
the fact that Kit just so happened to have a violin on him that he was "too scared" to mention
This was a good book, but not a great one. I loved the concept, liked several of the characters, but something didn't gel, and I was frustrated at the end of it.

A fun book about about a man's love for music and the way that it moves his life forward and unites him with the people around him. This book exudes such a deep love of all kinds of music that I found I couldn't read it without stopping to play the songs and albums that it describes.
The lovable misfits of this sweet and heartwarming novel are emotionally a bit inept and a tad naive. An accidental encounter in a music store situated in a deteriorating neighborhood primed for gentrification offers a chance for an unexpected friendship and possibly a romance.
Likeable, quirky characters abound in the small shops surrounding the 1980s music store that only sells vinyl records, refusing to modernize and sell CDs. Frank, the owner, has a gift for identifying the perfect music that a person needs to hear and pulls from all music genres to satisfy the ear and the heart. Both Frank and his elusive German lady friend, Ilsa, must reach back into their own pasts through music to find emotional peace.
Providing a solid nod to the power of music to transform, this is mainstream fiction with a touch of English romance.

The ending of this was cute but it took WAY too long to get there. I did not enjoy this.
