The Music Shop

3.69 AVERAGE

3.5 rating. The beginning is very slow. A few frustrating moments where if the characters would just talk problems would be solved but the ending was sweet. The writing was beautiful and the authors knowledge of music was amazing.

Ahhh a book set in the 80's featuring vinyl records and all types of great music as its central theme, yes please. Frank, the record store owner, wanted to provide his customers with the perfect song or artist based on what they were feeling, what they were in the mood for. He wasn't making any money off of his vinyl sales. CD's were hitting the markets and every chain store had them, vinyl records soon to be a thing of the past. But the man who would only listen to Chopin found his love of Aretha, a banker found the perfect song to lull his baby to sleep. Frank was a kind soul and wanted to share his love of music with the world which is reminiscent of the lyrics by Ani DiFranco... that the kindness he's lavished on strangers is more than we can explain.

To be fair, I think this is a good book if it's a genre you like or are looking for. It's sort-of chick-lit. The story is "movie magical" and leaves you feeling cozy and optimistic... and there's so much talk about music that it becomes lightly educational too. The backdrop of music was the high point for me.

OVERALL: Instead of a quirky lady who is at a turning part in her life, we get a quirky dude. He owns a music shop that's financially struggling. He has friends but runs from love (something clearly happened) and he's totally okay with friends and music until an interesting woman walks in (the lady on the cover). This 'awakens' him--he becomes curious and fascinated about her and wonders if he will see her again-- he does, but doesn't ask her out or anything (you know how this story goes). Between the love chasing and the personal growth/saving his shop, I felt too bored to do this story again, even if it was "fresher" with the main character being male. This story doesn't move quickly, it doesn't demand your attention, you can put it down and pick it back up again a week later and be fine. Sometimes that's the book you need; I just don't need that and would rather read something else.

I DO think "it's me" and not "the book." I've read crappy books. This isn't crappy it's just not working for me (I'm finding it boring... but if I didn't read as much as I do, I probably would have liked it a lot more).

This book was ok. I listened to it. I enjoyed the narration. I wasn't invested in any of the characters. So much of this book was sad. A band of misfits creates a family of sorts. But does it really work out in the end?

A delightful read--I love happy endings.

A profoundly wistful tale about community, growth and overcoming trauma, with a quirky cast of lovable characters. Prepare to have your heartstrings pulled, hard. 🥹 As a record collector and music lover, this book really resonated with me!

Hoe is dit zo triest maar tegelijk ook mooi? Door dit boek heb ik zin om een platenspeler te kopen en vervolgens alle platen die genoemd worden erbij, maar ik weet niet of mijn portemonnee dat zo leuk zou vinden.

This was written beautifully but it was so awfully boring and went on forever and then ended in a flash mob which is my least favorite thing.
