Ok the book itself isn't mind blowing, but this was IT when I was in like... 6th grade! I mean that in the best way possible

Picked this up purely based on the cover (I am a big Tara McPherson fan) and was really pleasantly surprised by it. I haven't read too many books like this with characters this quirky. Kiki is a really interesting character and I love her eclectic band of friends. I also really liked that NYC played such a prominent role as a setting/character (the scene with the rats is disgusting). If you like mysteries and precocious teens with a knack for mischief, I think you'll like Kiki Strike. I will definitely be reading the next book in this series.

Ananka meets Kiki Strike who changes her life forever. Kiki and Ananka form the Irregulars from Girl Scouts who have talents beyond winning merit badges. After they find the Shadow City and begin to explore, they run across far more than they bargained for and begin to question whether Kiki is a good guy or just someone who used them to further her own criminal agenda. As the story progresses, and the girls grow older, new clues begin to emerge about Kiki Stike and the world of Shadow City. A very interesting story with several twists and turns as well as a great lead in to the next book in the series, The Empress's Tomb.

So this book ended up completely different to what I expected! It was so interesting and great! I can't get the next books though!

The plot is hilarious (Delinquent Girl Scouts?) and I love it. Exciting, and strangely believable. The characters seem very real, and you really care for them (evil and good). Lots of twists too.

This book showed up on a number of my Goodreads recommendations list. Very disappointed. The premise and story were fine, but the book was just slow going.

I debated whether to give this a 3 or a 4. But the part that swayed me to give it a 3 was the part when they went after Betty. There were a bunch of circimstances that seemed a little too far fetched to me. But otherwise I found the Shadow City part very intriguing: a city for smugglers and thieves under New York City.

The character Kiki Strike was very intriguing as well and I kept wondering who she really was and what she was up to.

But my favorite part of the book were the little end of chapter tips like: How to follow someone without getting caught, how to be a master of disguise, how to eavesdrop, how to tell a lie, etc. And the history of New York was fascinating. I want to go see all the places she talked about!

If you want a good junvielle "spy-esque" type of book, this is the one. There's a good chance I'll read the 2nd one.
