It’s no Pendragon, but it held my interest well enough.

Machale really loves writing tough™️ female characters while still having the guys be misogynistic lol. Idk how to feel about it; like they’re cool, but very one-note. That said, he’s more of a plot guy.

As for the plot: intriguing, but I still don’t really know who the bad guy is… probably got confused because I listened to the audio instead of reading it. I guess the next book will reveal more.

I wasn’t sure what I was expecting from this series? I like dystopian books and picked this one up out of curiosity. This series is unlike any I have ever read! It took me on a ride with so many twists and turns I read all the books in one week! (I also had 8 hours a day to do so). I devoured these books!! They’re definitely YA and I think so many people would enjoy the creativity and imagination this storyline has!!! The idea and plot are brilliantly unique!!

I had two reasons for reading this book--1) to determine if all students in my middle school could read it and 2) it has been nominated as a SC Junior Book Award Nominee for the 2015 - 2016 school. So, I was a little reluctant to read it as it didn't seem to be my cup of tea.

Regardless, it was a good book. Furthermore, I am definitely considering purchasing the remainder of the series for next school year. While the book started a bit slow, it was non-stop, nail-biting action by the end. Of course, the story ends with more questions than answers.

I did think some parts of this story were violent, but no more so than the "Hunger Games" trilogy. And, unlike many of the dystopian stories currently out, this story is told primarily from a guy's point of view.

MacHale really knows how to build a world and then make the worst things happen for his protagonists.  I'm very intrigued to know what will happen. The characters weren't as fully developed as I expected, but there's definite potential.

This was my favorite Machale book by far. He's one of my favorite authors and this book is a prime example why. From beginning to end this book is non stop action, and head scratching mysteries that leave you begging for more. I cannot wait until the second book in this series is released I'm ready to be back on the edge of my seat, because I never left it while I read SYLO.

Action, mystery, suspense in a post-apocalyptic setting. Not enough answers, even for a first book in a series. Frustrating.
