challenging emotional informative inspiring reflective slow-paced

This book has been integral to my self-initiated therapy in tandem with trauma-informed therapy with a professional. While I would say that this book is definitely triggering (and I needed to step away from it on many occasions to take care of myself) and speaks openly and in depth of various traumas, it is never done with irresponsibility or without reason. My one concern (which my neuroscientist partner also flagged) is that a lot of the research on the brain that is presented in this book is fairly outdated. With that in mind, I also wonder a lot about whether the psychiatric information in this book sits in a similar boat.

Overall, providing trauma victims (and non-victims) with information on the complexities of PTSD and how it affects our entire lives is a wonderfully validating and empowering thing, and I’m grateful to be equipped with the knowledge Dr. van der Kolk has provided.

whittenholmes's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 68%

It's a very dense read, not inaccessible, but with very heavy themes discussed openly throughout. I'd like to get a paper copy so I could examine the treatments section and skim over any triggering content.
