I typically either love Breene's books or I don't. This one fell in the middle.

The first half:
You need to have read Sin and Chocolate to understand who all the players are and how they interact. It's a nice visit with some of your favorite characters. However, not much happens. I found myself putting it down a few times.

The second half:
Things get moving in a LOTR kind of way, lots of walking and talking and fighting monsters. It was pretty entertaining. I liked it.

The plot and characters:
The plot and pacing follows Breene's arc in the Sin and Chocolate series. In that series, not a lot happens in the 1st half of book 1, except character development. Because we're already familiar with the characters from that series, that kinda gets skipped in Obsidian. Four years have passed. I would have loved to see more of the character-building scenes like in the original series, more depth to Daisy. She seems exactly the same.

The hero, whose name escapes me just now, is developed similarly to Kieran. He's an imperious jerk with a slightly chivalrous side that he denies. But hot and magically powerful. And he has a crew of loyal men, not women, around him. I'm a bit disappointed in that, as the Magical Midlife and Demon Days series do such a great job with developing strong women with strong female friends. Daisy doesn't seem to have that system in place, nor does it seem she'll develop one.

Our hero info dumps his past and motivation at the end. I prefer a slower reveal, or at least one that's part of the climax, not a dump and run (cliffhanger).

That said, the writing is solid. I will stick with this through at least 1 more installment to see if it picks up.

Holyyyyyyyyy Banter 🥵
Have you ever read two characters who are written so absolutely, perfectly for one another that you just know in your heart that if they don’t end up together nothing else will be right in the world? Well, let me introduce you to Daisy and Tarian.
Daisy is human and a kick a$$, independent, can take care of herself FMC. She had a rough upbringing and faced many trials and tribulations but she was able to overcome anything thrown her way by finding comfort and acceptance in her “found family”. Tarian is an immortal who is as cocky as they come but also ruthless, powerful and overly protective of what he deems to be his- including Daisy and will unalive anyone who dares harm her or threaten the unusual relationship that they’ve developed. Put these two in the same room together (or horse) and the sparks fly immediately. Their connection is out of this world-literally and it is so clear page after page that they are destined for one another. There is no denying their chemistry even if fate may have other plans in mind.
I cannot stress enough how witty, clever and overall natural the banter between Daisy and Tarian feels. Seriously, they go head to head on most of their intellectual conversations and I found myself chuckling while reading and wondering what was going to come out of their mouths next. The banter is chefs kiss 🤌🏼
K.F. Breene has done a phenomenal job at world building for this duology. Holy smokes! There are so many layers and unique creatures with special abilities that it is so easy to see why I was hooked from the very first page. I also love a book with a map 🙌🏼 because why the heck not draw it out for us visual learners… major bonus points for that little detail!
I am so glad I picked up Obsidian and can’t wait to see where these two characters with their smart mouths and “families” take us during book 2…

Dnf chapter 15.

This was not for me.

I guess that means I don't like Breene's spin-off books.

This is a spin-off from Demigods of San Francisco.

The other book I dnf'd from Breene was a spin-off from Deliciously Dark Fairytales.

Well, now I know, and will keep to the series and skip the spin-offs.

I wish I liked it ...

Daisy’s story took a dark turn from San Francisco. BA human FMC who can hold her own against Fae?
The banter? Fantastic. I loved the sarcastic remarks from both MMC and FMC.
This book is a dark fantasy but not too dark. A nice entry into darker fantasy.
The MMC is not a fan of those who try to play with his “doll.” A mix of touch her and

I love everything that KF Breene writes and this book is no exception. I've always loved Daisy from the OG Demigods of San Francisco series and I am so excited to have seen her finally get her moment in this book.

As I have come to expect from KF Breene, this book was excellent. The characters are complex (even though some we are already familiar with from Demigods from San Francisco series - also fabulous), the world building wonderful, the writing great! I LOVE how this author creates absolutely plausible characters with flaws and quirks, capable of great things and great accidental mishaps. This particular book (part 1 of a planned duology) was quite action packed and a little lighter on the humor than some of her other books. Altho the humor is one of my favorite things about this author's writing, i didn't really feel the lack here - it was an intense story about intense people and stopping the humor-level at snark was solidly in keeping with the tone of the plot.

There is no need to have read the previous series to follow along here, however, it does enrich the 1st third or so if you do since the FMC interacts with her found family from that series. The rest is all new relationships, all new world building, all new challenges! Since i "knew" Daisy already from the Demigods series, i was already excited to spend a whole book with her - i.e., she's a fabulous kick-ass FMC that isn't inconsistent with her toughness (regardless of situation or love interest) and isn't annoying in being soooo independent that she's more a tag-line than a real person. The MMC is all also interesting; i'm not sold on him just yet (it's a duology, so mind the cliff), but he's complex enough to be intriguing about where he'll end up and how he gets there.

Long story long: i love this author, i loved this world, i love this book as the first in a series extender-duology, i hope i can keep reading about this wonderful world (and any KF Breene thinks up) for years to come. Go read it! (in fact, go read her entire catalogue :) :) )
