It took me a long time to finish this book. Sorry, I was not caught up in the story. I hated Alice and her guts, she has got to be one of my most hated characters in books. Selfish bitch. The redeeming thing she did in the end was not enough. The writing was not bad, it's just that I hated the characters. Sorry.

Alice had cancer. Now she's in remission. This second chance on life changes everything, but she's not necessarily handling it well. Harvey has always loved Alice, but now that he's seen all her flaws, can he continue to be her whipping boy? Told from alternating POVs and alternating time streams, this is a great story of friendship, love, loss, growth, and life.

I was so close to giving this a two but then I remembered bits of it that weren't that bad. Things I had issues with:
1) Protagonist - she came off annoying, self-centred and very very unlikeable. Despite the fact that Alice had cancer, I had no sympathy for her. She got on my nerves so much!
2) The Story - it made for an interesting premise, but for the most part I found it ridiculous and confusing. Maybe it was just me.
3) The Ending - I still don't know what to make of it.

The good were few but I loves Harvey. He was the only reason why I kept reading. That and to see what Alice's bucket list was, which wasn't even a central element to the story but I've already said I didn't like it anyways.

You'd think I'd feel more empathy for a character who is given a terminal diagnosis of leukemia...but I just couldn't muster it. Alice was a really unlikeable character for me. A junior in high school, she is consumed with her creepy boyfriend and the drama between her and an arch-enemy, Celeste.

When Alice enlists the help from her longtime friend, Harvey, to complete a bucket-list-of-revenge before she dies, she is able to right the wrongs of her heart. However, when she is given the news that she is in remission and can return to school, she is forced to own the nastiness she has wrought.

I loved Dumplin’ so I was eager to read Julie Murphy’s first book. At first I wasn’t sure I’d like it, since it’s about a girl with cancer and her bucket list - a topic it seems like most YA books have excessively covered at this point. But when Alice is diagnosed with cancer, she doesn’t have much time left, so her bucket list revolves around getting revenge on people who have hurt her. That’s different enough, but when Alice is told she’s in remission, she has to face the people she humiliated.

This was some deep read, the main character was so frustrating that 90% of the time I wanted to punch her in the face. Sometimes she was so twisted it was hard for me to sympathize with her, all I wanted was to slap her and yell at her to get her shit together because she couldn't just go around ruin the one boy that loved her, the ugly parts of her included, and act like it was okay to screw with his head and feelings. There are limits and she crossed a lot of them.
It came to a point where I gave up on her changing, or righting her wrongs, anymore. Thank god I was wrong!

I love the layering of the main protagonist in this novel--she's strong, she's weak, she's annoying, and she's endearing! I was wrapped up in the story from the start. Murphy's writing style and humor shines in this book.

I hate characters that are always feeling sorry for themselves. However, this girl softened me. It's a sweet story and I enjoyed the easy read.

The teenage love story has it all...cancer, rivalries, revenge, break-ups, dating other people, etc. I grew to detest both main characters towards the middle of the book...Harvey for being so pathetic, and Alice for being so utterly cruel. Fortunately the author develops the characters enough that they were more tolerable by the end.
