You’d never be able to tell this is supposed to be a historical fiction novel because the language the author uses is so modern. Why is a character referring to someone as “Mr.GarlicFarticus”??? Immediately DNF’ed. It took me right out of the story.

Ohhhh mannn this book was SO good!! I am totally invested in this trilogy. Set in Ancient Rome, in the city of Pompeii, The Wolf Den follows the story of Amara, a woman who once lived a life of freedom as a doctor's daughter, who's fortune changes drastically when she is sold as a prostitute in a brothel run by a harsh master. Amara is a strong woman, determined not to let her circumstances define who she is or who she will become. Alas, she is human, and Amara's character changes as survival and preservation turn into advancement, fueled with selfishness and manipulation. Amara's journey is set to the tune of love, sex, and power, set in the shadow of a notoriously famous volcano which is sparsely mentioned...but we all know what's coming. It's the vivid storytelling, incredible character development and the knowledge of impending doom that has made Elodie Harper's, The Wolf Den, a 5 star read for me. I can't wait to read the next installment!

I really like the story and descriptions of the time period. Also absolutely love the female friendships. I think the writer navigates describing how horrible their work is very well- not sugarcoating it but not unnecessarily graphic
Felt that the ending came quite abruptly  and I’m not dying to read the next one … i will tho duh!!
adventurous tense medium-paced

“The Wolf Den” was compelling and fast paced. The shrewd and cunning narrator had my attention from the first page to the last. I can’t wait to read the sequel.

I enjoyed this book overall.

The writing style did throw me for a loop though, you wouldn’t really know it was supposed to be written in the time of Pompeii, it could be any time, even modern day. That for me is where the books falls down in terms of the world building of the place and time the book was set, it lacked a lot of depth.

Because it’s so modernly written, it did take a bit of the essence of the story away for me, although, the fact that it was written in the style that it was, made it a very easy read (in language not topic).

This is a dark book in terms of story line and content, and tragically the life of so many Roman slaves. Watching the choices the main FMC makes / chooses to make to survive the life she has been forced into is painful at times. The reality being, what choices would any of us make in that situation.

The friendship between the women was well done, showing the comradeship and protectiveness towards each other, as well as the jealousy and envy. Showcasing well how much they needed each other to survive, and at the same time, how much they needed to compete with each other to survive.

A solid read and I’ll continue with the next book in the series.
