I went into this book not wanting to read it or this series but after finishing Cold Reign (Jane Yellowrock #11) and it appeared that there is some possible crossover I decided I just needed to suck it up and read. My whole prejudice with this book and series is Ricky Bo but I do plan to read the next one in the series and I can see the authors build up to what happens in the next book that was discussed in Cold Reign. I absolutely love the cover of this book.
Definitely different from the Jane world while still being able to pull you into the rich world of Nell.

Son of a biscuit eater! How're you gonna come bringing problems to someone's home and not help with solutions?
4.5 stars. Rounding up because it's been awhile since I've given anything 5 stars. (Arbitrary? Who, me?)
I was hesitant to start this because Ricky was mentioned on the back blurb and I really don't like him. But no worries, he's not a romantic lead and at one point Nell literally kicks him in the balls.
There are some romantic elements, but a lot more of the story is about sisterhood and family and belonging. I really enjoyed that.
The world and writing are dark, lush, and beautifully described, like you'd expect from this author.
Content warning: References to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, including abuse of children.

Wow, an amazing book! Nell was an awesome narrator, loved her story, loved the plot, and I can't wait to read the next book!
"if i ever prayed anymore it was like this, my face to the sun, in contact with the woods and the ground."
"thats not religion, thats cult talk. real religion is about love and redemption and healing, not putting people down, segregating them into smaller and smaller groups so they can be controlled. controlling people is evil, real evil. even god doesnt control people. he gave us free will."

Interesting premise for those who like urban fantasy with a twist. Nell Ingram has an affinity for the earth that goes well-beyond a simple green thumb, and leads her into a new and very different (for her) life.
Spin-off from the Jane Yellowrock series, featuring Nell. This was a nice start of a series. While it is good to have read Jane Yellowrock before this series, it doesn't seem necessary to understand what is going on in this book. There are a few references to other instances and characters from that series, but it doesn't feel like anything important will be missed if I hadn't known those references in depth.
While there is one of my least favorite characters from Jane's series in this book, it does not feature him and didn't take away any enjoyment for this book. Nell is the feature and she is fun and awesome. She is getting to know herself and her power here and comes to many realizations.
