A charming book that is more intriguing as a story about friendship, grief, and a magical house than a romance. I am interested in continuing the series more because of the mysteries set up than any desire to read about the main trio’s romances.

A little light on the romance, but for a fiction story, great!

*Over half way through the audio book right now* I always feel bad giving harsh reviews but man… This is definitely written by/for older millennials or younger gen x. A lot of the humor made me whence. The initial romantic and intimate feelings that weren’t outwardly shared made me so uncomfortable. I cannot imagine thinking some of the things these characters think in the specific situations they are in. I very much enjoy the setting and the magic. But boy howdy is it hard to get past the not endearing awkwardness.
*Editing after finishing* Ok so as corny as a lot of it was I honestly really enjoyed it. Yes the main characters (full grown adults) have a lot of growing up to do. Yes I continued to literally physically cringe through out the book. But. The tiny town, the coziness and the low stakes mystery just got me. Not a high brow read nor will it be at the top of my recommendations but gosh darnit did I have a good time listening. A good, cozy little mystery.
I will say in regards to the female narrator seemed to get the voices a bit mixed up which at times made it confusing.

A solid beginning to a new series. I do like the premise of Riley's magic and how it's different from other books. Looking forward to more answers in the next book.

It was….OK. I loved the characters and the world-building, and the character conflicts rose organically out of the backstory. There wasn’t a lot of handwringing or over-justification or drama over Edison’s late fiancée, which was refreshing (though it felt a little easy?).

We had a romance, a nascent coven, a scavenger hunt, ghosts to move to the afterlife, evil artifacts to find, a haunted house to explore and traumas to face. That’s a lot, which meant that not everything got enough attention to feel satisfying. We also ended up with loose ends that I’m sure feed the next book, but no real resolution in this one.

Riley did a lot on her own that could have been used as bonding for her and Edison or her and her coven. I’m great with closed-door romance, but I was left feeling like I didn’t really know why I should root for Edison and Riley to be together. They’re fine, glad it all worked out, but…meh. If the stakes had been slightly higher, Harper could have played with Edison’s trauma around losing people he loves; Riley doesn’t seem the sort to enjoy an overprotective boyfriend, so that would have given some nice tension. Or Harper could have played more with Riley’s issues around rejection and abandonment.

When Riley inherits the Shaddow House from her late Aunt Nora, her life seemingly goes from bad to worse. With the help of her newly formed coven and a cute local librarian she takes on the task of being stewardess of a haunted mansion.

This cozy, spooky, witchy book was the absolute perfect read for fall. The character were so lovable and the cozy island now has be dying to visit a cute small town. I can not wait to read book two. This is a MUST READ for fall.
