“I am not a good man, shei'tani," he corrected. "I never have been. But for you I will strive to be better.”

Okay, Swooooooooning. I am so stoked to have been selected to receive this series in the new covers.
The new covers are GORGEOUS!!! It matches this fierce story so much better.
I adore the characters, the world building is phenomenal and the love story is epic.
I definitely recommend this to all romantasy lovers. I can’t wait to read the next book for more Ellie and Rain.

COULD THIS BE YOU?

Did you read the Twilight series, even though the lack of plot and the terrible writing made you secretly hate yourself and weep in the night?

Are you now pining, even BURNING, for more gorgeous aloof rich heroes with funny-colored eyes to sweep you away to magical lands where you will discover your special destiny and incredible beauty, but you don't know where to turn because Midnight Sun has been delayed indefinitely?

Would you like to recover at least SOME of your self-respect?

Then RUN, don't WALK, to find C.L. Wilson's Tairen Soul series.

Four books about the incredible, magical, soul-bonded love between a rich, powerful, sexy fairy king with glowing purple eyes who can turn into a gigantic flying cat and his too-thin, too-red-haired ordinary girl soulmate who
Spoilerturns out to have the power to RESTORE SOULS, heal wounds and generally to be the most Unique and Special Elf/Person in the Universe.

Together, they fight crime argue a lot about whether she'll be able to love him enough to keep him from going insane, whether she deserves his magnificent love, whether her family will let her go, who loves who more, whether she'll make a good queen of Fairyland and other riveting topics.

BUT WAIT, there's MORE!

UNLIKE the Twilight series, these books come pre-loaded with two-dimensional characters (one more than Twilight!), a standard set of fantasy plots and subplots involving evil wizards and politicking, and actual attempts at world-building!

PLUS, for a limited time only, the writing is actually OKAY and doesn't make you want to GOUGE YOUR EYES OUT every other page.

Are you INTERESTED? YOU SHOULD BE!!!!

C.L. Wilson's Tairen Soul series: The (sort of) thinking person's Twilight. READ IT NOW!

Brown papers to obscure the lurid cover graphics not included. Offer void where better fantasy books are available. Self-awareness, complexity and realism sold separately.

(no original review ... so this review is from Dec 2023 re-read)

I know this series is considered one of the gold standards of fantasy romance, and I really do like it. However, the FMC Ellie is a little bit too much of a wilting daisy for me in this first book. It comes across as whiny at time.

I can't recall if that continues or it she grows out of it...I feel like she grows out of it. I guess we'll see. I'm just super in the mood for some non-YA romantasy, and so I've been re-reading some on my shelves because I can't find much that I haven't read that isn't YA. There are beats where the FMC feels YA-ish in this book, even though she's 24 (which, in a medieval-ish style fantasy, is nowhere near childhood, it's practically old maid territory), because of the wilting daisy thing. I mean, she literally faints when she meets the MMC. I practically got a migraine from rolling my eyes so hard.

But I do overall really enjoy the story, and I remember liking the series very much, so I'm reading onwards.

Thank god they changed the cover art. New art is way better than the previous.

Being largely categorized as a romance, I thought I was setting myself up for an evening of classic "their loins ached for each other" type reading with lots of giggles.

Boy, was I wrong. This sucker has PLOT, and lots of it! The storyline, political intrigue, and mysterious badguys totally had this book rolling strong. I loved it. There's enough question about different characters' involvement in the evil plans that I honestly have no idea who is really in on it, besides BaddieA and Baddie B (A's sidekick).

The romance is there, but it's almost a classic Austenesque sort of romance, with wooing. The naughty bits didn't really show up until the last three pages. And honestly? The book would have been just fine without it but it didn't detract from it either. I'm happily awaiting my copy of Book#2 to show up at the library so I can see where this plot goes (because the storyline is really that compelling!).
